Demystifying Carré Neige

Now, I get it; insurance talk isn't as exciting as fresh powder, but trust me, it's a must-have for your family ski holiday. Especially when, on average:

  • A helicopter rescue in the mountains costs a whopping 1704€!
  • If you need rescuing off the slopes, that's 382€
  • And a ride to the medical center? 187€!

Yikes, right? Ski insurance can be your safety net. But, how do you choose the right one for your family?

Enter Carré Neige. It's like your guardian angel on the slopes. For a mere 3.30€ per day per person, or 26.40€ for stays between 8 to 21 days, Carré Neige offers coverage for accidents while skiing, winter sports, and even off-piste areas reachable via ski lifts. But that's not all; it also covers you for sledging and unexpected illnesses. Plus, if you get stuck due to a skiing accident, Carré Neige will take care of your repatriation.

But wait, there's more! Carré Neige Integral, at 4€ per day per person, includes all of the above and even lets you book ski-lift passes, skiing lessons, and childcare. The cherry on top? It covers you before and during your stay, with a whopping €50,000 global coverage limit. That's some serious peace of mind.

Unpacking Carré Neige

Here's the scoop: Carré Neige is your go-to for daily coverage during your ski holiday, while the “Carte Neige” now called the Carré Neige Saison is more of a season-long commitment. The choice depends on your skiing style and how often you plan to hit the slopes.

You can opt for the Carré Neige Saison if you are taking multiple ski trips as it covers non-consecutive trips and ski holidays in different ski resorts.

Ski Insurance and my experience...

Now, let's get personal. I've seen my fair share of accidents and near-misses on these slopes, and I've learned that ski insurance can be a lifesaver. The worst situation happened when I worked for a British Tour Operator in a previous life.

A member of the team had a friend come out who “borrowed” their season ski lift pass (season passes are not transferable between people). This “friend” then headed off-piste, with someone else’s ski pass and, of course, with zero insurance. The guy then had a nasty fight with a cliff drop and was helicoptered to the nearest hospital – he was fine. Several broken bones and a long recovery but physically recovered. His parents, however, had to remortgage their house to cover all his medical expenses – well in excess of £50,000.

This happened over 10 years ago and he is still my warning story – learn from his mistakes.

How to Purchase Carré Neige

The process is as easy as carving down a mountainside. You can grab standard Carré Neige when you purchase your lift passes. For Carré Neige Integral, it's best to buy it in advance of your ski trip to cover you before and during your stay.

Navigating the Claims Process

Accidents can happen, and it's essential to know what to do. If you find yourself in a sticky situation, you can easily file a claim online within 15 days of the incident. Find out more on the Carré Neige website.  It's all about keeping it simple, right?

Accidents can happen to even the most experienced skiers. That's why having Carré Neige – or another ski travel insurance – in your back pocket is crucial. It's like a guardian angel for your family, covering accidents while skiing, off-piste adventures, sledding, and even unexpected illnesses.

And if you find yourself immobilised due to a skiing accident, Carré Neige has your back with repatriation coverage. A: Absolutely! Carré Neige covers off-piste skiing accessible from the ski lifts with a ski pass valid for the entire ski area.

Q2: If I buy Carré Neige in one ski resort, does it cover another ski resort?

A: Carré Neige guarantees that you can enjoy snow sports in all Savoie resorts during the insurance's period of validity. Carré Neige Saison is valid in all Savoie resorts, whether or not you have a season pass.

Q3: Does the insured have to have been rescued to benefit from Carré Neige cover?

A: No, even if you fall on the slopes without needing rescue or can make it down on your own, Carré Neige has your back.

Q4: Does Carré Neige have to be valid for the same period as the lift pass?

A: Not necessarily, but your reimbursement will be based on the period of your Carré Neige's validity, not the services provided. For example, if your ski pass is valid for 6 days, but your Carré Neige covers only 3 days, the calculation will be based on those three insured days.

Q5: Does Carré Neige cover the breakage of the insured's ski equipment?

A: Unfortunately, no. The cost of replacing or repairing personal and rental equipment is not covered. In the case of rented equipment, you'll need to contact the rental company directly.

Q6: Can Carré Neige be purchased separately from lift passes?

A: Yes, if you've booked your lift passes online and forgot to subscribe to Carré Neige, you can purchase it on-site when you arrive at the resort. Simply go to the ski lift ticket office with your lift pass and attach a Carré Neige to it. Keep the receipt for any future claims.

Q7: What does “family” mean for the sale of Carré Neige Family Season?

A: A family must consist of 3 or more people (no upper limit) from the same family, including ascendants and descendants. Ski passes must be purchased in the same transaction and appear on the same sales receipt. Blended families can also subscribe to Carré Neige Saison Famille, as long as all passes were bought in the same transaction and appear on the same receipt. The specifics may vary from one resort to another, so it's a good idea to check with your chosen resort for details.
