What winter equipment do I need to drive a motorhome to La Plagne?

La Plagne is in a mountain area where French winter-equipment rules apply.

Between 1 November and 31 March, vehicles travelling in designated mountain zones must either:

  • be fitted with suitable winter tyres on all four wheels, or
  • carry approved snow chains or textile snow socks that can be fitted to at least two driven wheels.

If you're relying on winter tyres to meet the legal requirement, look for the 3PMSF mountain-and-snowflake marking.

Even if your motorhome is fitted with winter tyres, I strongly recommend carrying chains that fit your vehicle and practising how to fit them before your trip. Conditions on the climb to La Plagne can change quickly during snowfall.

Tips for Driving Motorhomes to La Plagne

1. Preparing Your Motorhome for Winter Conditions

Before setting off to La Plagne, ensure your motorhome is ready for winter. This means checking that your heating system is fully operational, your water pipes are insulated against freezing, and your vehicle is equipped with winter tyres. Snow chains should also be on hand and easy to access. Familiarise yourself with installing these chains before your trip, as they can be crucial for safe travel on snowy roads.

For more about the rules and regulations about winter snow tyres and driving in ski resorts, read my travel guide.

2. Driving Motorhomes on Snowy La Plagne Roads

Driving a large vehicle like a motorhome on snowy roads requires extra caution. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, as stopping distances can significantly increase on snow or ice. Drive slowly to maintain control and avoid sudden movements that could lead to skids. Using gears to control your speed on descents can help reduce reliance on brakes and minimize the risk of sliding.

3. Navigating La Plagne’s Mountain Hairpin Bends

Mountain roads and passes can be challenging, especially in a motorhome. The climb into La Plagne is up 21 hairpin bends. It means lots of dramatic scenery and sharp turns on steep roads.

When approaching these steep inclines, it’s important to maintain a steady speed and use a low gear to prevent straining the engine. Slow down using your gears on the approach to the hairpins rather than using breaks. Keep moving smoothly and avoid stopping. Restarting on steep roads, in icy or snowy conditions can be difficult to impossible.

Be mindful of weather conditions and road closures, as mountain passes can be susceptible to sudden changes. Keeping an eye on local traffic updates and weather forecasts will help you plan the safest route to La Plagne.

4. Efficient Heating and Energy Use

Once you've arrived, managing your energy and heating efficiently is key to comfortable living in your motorhome during the Alpine winter. Insulate windows and doors to keep heat in and cold out. Consider using thermal curtains or window covers. Monitor your gas levels closely; keeping a spare gas bottle can prevent running out in the cold. If your motorhome relies on electricity for heating, be mindful of your usage to avoid overloading the system.

5. Winter Living Tips for Motorhomes in La Plagne

Living in a motorhome in snowy conditions requires adjustments to your daily routine. Keep a stock of non-perishable food and water in case of severe weather conditions that might prevent you from leaving your site. Ensure your living space is well-ventilated to prevent condensation build-up, which can lead to dampness and cold. Finally, have a set of warm, waterproof clothing and boots ready for when you venture outside, ensuring you stay dry and warm.

FAQs About Motorhome Parking in La Plagne

Can I park my motorhome in La Plagne?

Yes, but overnight motorhome parking is restricted to designated areas. The main dedicated motorhome site is the Caravaneige in Plagne Villages, at approximately 2,050m altitude.
It has 40 pitches, electricity, drinking water and waste disposal facilities. The currently published price is €23 per day.
For winter 2026/27, the management and reservation system is changing and the new booking method has not yet been published. See the booking update above for the latest information.

Can I park my motorhome closer to the ski lifts?

While Plagne Villages’ Aire de Camping-Car is close to some lifts, you won’t find dedicated motorhome parking in the main village centres like Plagne Centre or Belle Plagne. Parking your motorhome in regular car parks or street parking is discouraged due to size and space restrictions. However, you’ll still be quite close to the slopes at the Plagne Villages site and can easily hop on a lift or shuttle to get around.

Are there any restrictions for motorhomes in La Plagne?

Yes, there are some. Overnight parking is only permitted in designated motorhome areas like the one in Plagne Villages. You can’t park overnight in regular car parks, and snow-clearing operations could mean your motorhome gets blocked in or fined if left in the wrong spot. Always check signage and local regulations, especially when parking near the pistes or lifts.

What’s the best route to drive a motorhome to La Plagne?

Coming from the valley, you’ll take the Aime La Plagne exit from the N90 motorway. From there, it’s a winding mountain road (D221/D223) up to La Plagne. These roads are well-maintained in winter, but they can be narrow and steep in places.
Here’s what you need to know:
Snow Chains: These are absolutely essential. Even with snow tyres, you’ll need to carry snow chains and know how to fit them, as roads can get icy quickly.
Fuel Stops: Fill up in Aime, as there are no large petrol stations in La Plagne suitable for motorhomes.
Drive Time: It takes about 30-40 minutes from the valley floor (Aime) to the ski resort, depending on conditions.

How should I prepare my motorhome for driving in the Alps?

To tackle alpine roads safely, prepare for winter conditions by ensuring:
Snow Tyres: These are mandatory in many French regions, including the Alps, during winter.
Snow Chains: As mentioned, chains are critical for mountain driving. You’ll often find signs when chains are mandatory, even for vehicles with snow tyres.
Winter Fluids: Make sure your motorhome has anti-freeze for the engine and high-grade windscreen washer fluid that won’t freeze in sub-zero temperatures.
Heating: Be sure your onboard heating works efficiently as temperatures can drop drastically, especially overnight.

How hard is it to drive a motorhome in a ski resort like La Plagne?

Driving a motorhome in a ski resort can be tricky due to narrow roads, hairpin turns, and icy conditions. It’s important to:
Go Slow: Resorts like La Plagne are full of pedestrians, especially near ski lifts and in the village. Keep your speed down and use low gears to control your descent on steep slopes.
Plan Your Route: Stick to main roads, as side streets in ski resorts can be narrow and difficult to turn around in with a larger vehicle.
Parking Caution: Only park in designated spots, as road clearances and snowploughs can make roadside parking hazardous.
