Petit Chaperon Rouge Review: La Plagne Restaurants

Petit Chaperon Rouge Plagne 1800

On the ski slopes in Plagne 1800, Le Petit Chaperon Rouge offers a great dining experience that stands out. In La Plagne, it’s one of the restaurants that the locals and seasonal workers will flock to. Known for its impressive steaks and unique cooking method, it’s a must-visit for meat lovers and culinary enthusiasts alike.

Join the inside track to get the story first from La Plagne.

How to Get to Petit Chaperon Rouge

The restaurant is across the piste from Plagne 1800, so it’s really not that far to walk to. But it is across the snow, so it’s a point to consider for those with young children, mobility issues, or who are navigating in ski boots. There isn’t really a path; you just head across. If they’ve had time, the restaurant team will have carved out some steps in the snow to get up to the restaurant. But it’s unlikely!

Don’t worry, it’s manageable but requires a bit of effort! So, plan accordingly to ensure a smooth and stress-free arrival. The last time we went, it was in late March when it was quite slushy. So it wasn’t slippery but was difficult to walk through (like a sand dune). Next time, I’d take a ski pole to walk with.

Menu Insights

The restaurant's menu celebrates local cuisine, focusing on quality ingredients and hearty dishes—specifically, meat and beef! So this isn’t a restaurant for vegans or vegetarians. But if you are looking for a delicious steak, you absolutely must head here!

However, the translated English menu might leave you more entertained than informed. For a restaurant that excels in steaks and côte du boeuf, they can’t spell ‘beef’ on their English menu. For a seamless experience, I'd recommend sticking to the French menu or asking the staff for recommendations. They're usually more than happy to help guide your choices.

Our Experience at Petit Chaperon Rouge

Petit Chaperon Rouge Plagne 1800

From the moment you step into Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, the aroma of wood smoke and roasting meat sets the stage for what's to come. The centrepiece is the roaring fire, where steaks and côte de boeuf are expertly cooked. It offers not just a spectacle but the promise of a meal cooked with care and tradition. The steak, when it arrives, is nothing short of perfection—a crusty char on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, each bite is a testament to the quality of produce and the skill behind the grill.

The kids were obsessed with watching the steaks over the fire and kept making me go look and point out which ones were ours!

When we were there last, my husband and I shared a côte du boeuf and so did our 2 friends. The kids had the kids menu (more on that below). The accompaniments are also really tasty, and the chips, which I think were homemade, disappeared at lightning speed.

My husband also splashed out on some great red wine to go with the steaks. And it was really worth it. So 10/10 for their wine menu!

I, of course, had to go for a cafe gourmand for dessert and a friend had the gooey, fondant au chocolat. Both were so tasty and a great way to round off the evening. However, I would have preferred to have a decaf coffee with the dessert, but they didn’t have any.

Kids' Corner: Family-Friendly Dining

One of the highlights of dining at Le Petit Chaperon Rouge is its approach to family dining. The kids' menu might not be extensive, but it hits the mark with a couple of dishes that cater to younger palates. The spaghetti bolognese is a standout, so much so that it might just be the quietest your little ones will be all evening as they devour their meals. The option to have the kids' meals served first is a thoughtful touch, allowing parents to enjoy their dining experience while the kids are happily engaged.

The only thing that let the kids menu down was that ice cream was one of the dessert options, but they only had vanilla. So my youngest was distraught that he couldn’t have chocolate – partly our fault that we were out having dinner at 9pm on a school night!

Atmosphere and Ambiance: Setting the Scene

Beyond the food, Le Petit Chaperon Rouge’s ambiance contributes significantly to its charm. The warmth of the fire, the buzz of conversation, and the rustic decor create a cosy, welcoming atmosphere ideal for winding down after a day on the slopes. It's the kind of place that invites you to linger over your meal, enjoy a glass of wine, and soak in the mountain vibes.

Booking Tips: Securing Your Table

Given its popularity, securing a table at Le Petit Chaperon Rouge requires a bit of foresight. While the traditional approach of calling might leave you in a loop of unanswered calls, texting for a reservation is highly effective. It seems to be the preferred and most efficient way to book your spot, ensuring you won’t miss out on this culinary gem.
