Is La Plagne snow sure in April?
One of the biggest questions I get from families planning a spring ski trip is whether La Plagne still has good snow in April. And the short answer? Yes – especially if you know where to go on the mountain.
La Plagne sits at high altitude with most of the villages between 1,800m and 2,100m, and the skiing goes all the way up to the glacier at 3,250m. That makes it one of the more snow-sure resorts in the Alps late in the season. In fact, I’ve still been skiing fresh powder in April for many seasons, although obviously that’s never guaranteed. What is reliable is that the upper pistes hold snow well thanks to the elevation and north-facing slopes.
If you’re staying in one of the higher villages like Belle Plagne or Plagne Centre, you’ll have direct access to the best late-season conditions. Lower down, like Montchavin or Montalbert, you might need to take the lift up out of the village and then back at the end of the day once the snow gets heavier, but you’ll still get plenty of ski time each day.
The resort also works hard to keep pistes in good shape with snowmaking and grooming, especially over the Easter holidays when lots of families visit. As long as you stick to the higher runs and follow the sun sensibly through the day, April skiing in La Plagne can be a brilliant mix of good spring snow and warm afternoons.
How much snow will there be in La Plagne in April?
As I've just said, a lot of snow will have melted. Lower slopes might be patchy and the sides of the pistes are green and clear of snow. But the La Plagne pistes still enjoy decent snow cover in April, with an average of around 50cm (20 inches) covering the slopes. The higher-altitude slopes are usually well-preserved, allowing for enjoyable skiing.
The lower valley villages (Montalbert, Montchavin, Champagny) will be seeing more snow melt. But you can rest assured that the pistes will be well-maintained and groomed, making the snow last longer, whereas the snow off the sides of the pistes may disappear.

How cold is it in La Plagne in April?
April brings milder temperatures to La Plagne and the Alps, with daytime highs averaging around 6°C to 12°C (43°F to 54°F). While it's warmer than the peak of winter, you'll still want to dress in layers and be prepared for varying weather conditions because it can still snow in these spring weeks.
Is La Plagne in April good for beginners?
April can be a good time for beginners in La Plagne, especially for those who prefer milder weather. With fewer crowds and a relaxed atmosphere, it offers a comfortable setting for learning. However, it's essential to check the snow conditions and book lessons with experienced instructors.
And if you are skiing with kids, be aware that the softer snow conditions can be hard for little skiers to push through. They will find it easier on firmer pistes in the earlier season. My boys struggle in April to push through the soft and slushy snow, meaning they move slower, get tired quicker, and need help getting across the flats. But they love the warmer weather and are typically happier on the slopes in April warm weather.

La Plagne keeps the spirits high with some exciting events in April:
- Main Kids School Holidays (30th March – 12th April)
April is a prime time for family skiing, and these school holidays provide an excellent opportunity for quality family time on the slopes. What's more, there are always plenty of family-friendly, non-skiing activities over Easter in the resort.
- Mega Bell (14th – 19th April
​La Plagne is introducing the inaugural Mega Bell Course on Saturday, 19 April 2025, during Easter weekend. This innovative ski and snowboard race offers two formats: the ‘S' format, suitable for participants aged 8 and over with red run proficiency, featuring three courses; and the ‘XL' format, designed for those aged 12 and above with black run skills, encompassing five courses.
Competitors will tackle a variety of challenges, including obstacle courses, boardercross, slalom runs, and a waterslide. Training sessions are available from 14–18 April.
