10 Questions to Ask Before Renting Ski Equipment

how to rent the best ski equipment

1. What types of equipment do you offer?

It's essential to know the range of equipment available. Some rental shops provide everything from skis and snowboards to helmets and boots, while others might have a more limited selection. Ensure they have what you need, especially if you have specific preferences or requirements.

2. Do you have equipment suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers?

Your skill level matters when it comes to choosing the right equipment. Beginners need forgiving, easy-to-turn skis, whereas advanced skiers might look for high-performance gear. Check if the rental provider can cater to different skill levels to ensure everyone in your group is equipped appropriately.

Avoid these common ski holiday booking mistakes

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people booking everything in the wrong order. In this video, I explain the simple booking timeline I recommend to make planning your ski holiday much easier.

3. Are the ski rentals regularly maintained and checked for safety?

Safety is a top priority on the slopes. Ask how often the equipment is serviced and inspected. Well-maintained gear not only performs better but also reduces the risk of accidents. You want to be confident that the equipment you’re renting is in top condition.

4. Can I reserve equipment in advance?

This will almost 100% be a yes. Most ski rental companies actively encourage people to book in advance. It’s why you find such good deals and discounts on online booking platforms like Snowrental or SkiSet

Reserving equipment ahead of time can save you a lot of hassle, especially during peak season. This ensures that the specific gear you need is available when you arrive, allowing you to hit the slopes faster without waiting in long lines.

5. Do you offer equipment fitting services?

Again, this is going to be almost a 100% yes answer. There are very few ski rental places that will send you out onto the mountain without correctly fitting ski equipment. Properly fitting equipment is crucial for both comfort and safety. Ask if the rental shop provides fitting services to help you find the right sizes and adjustments for your gear. A good fit can enhance your performance and prevent injuries.

6. What are your rental rates, and do you offer any discounts?

Understanding the cost upfront helps you budget better for your trip. Inquire about daily rates, multi-day packages, and any potential discounts. Some shops offer reduced rates for longer rental periods or group bookings.

Also remember to ask if they have any discounts or bundles together with ski school, ski lessons or ski passes. Quite often, ski rental shops will be partnered with some of these other providers.

7. Do you have equipment insurance or damage waiver options?

Accidents happen, and equipment can get damaged. Check if the rental provider offers insurance or damage waivers. This can save you from hefty charges in case of accidental damage, giving you peace of mind while skiing. However, before taking it out, it’s always worth checking in with your ski holiday insurance provider to see if your rental equipment is already covered.

8. Can I swap equipment during my rental period if needed?

Conditions on the mountain can change, and what worked on day one might not be ideal later. Ask if you can switch out your equipment during the rental period. This flexibility can make your skiing experience much more enjoyable.

This is something that most ski rental providers offer and is great as you progress or if you want to experience different snow conditions e.g., head off-piste one day.

9. What are your policies for returning equipment?

Understanding the return policies helps avoid unexpected charges. Ask about the deadline for returns, penalties for late returns, and if there are any specific procedures you need to follow. Knowing this in advance can save you from last-minute stress.

Depending on where you are staying, some rental companies will come and collect the ski equipment from your accommodation. Which (trust me!)  is amazing at the end of your trip when the last thing you want to do is lug all your ski gear across the resort to hand it back.

10. Do you offer any additional services, such as lockers, ski tuning, or transportation to the slopes?

Extra services can significantly enhance your overall experience. Whether it's a locker to store your gear, tuning services to keep your equipment in top shape or transportation to the slopes, these amenities can add convenience and value to your rental.
