Ski Holidays Aren't Just About Skiing

When you think of a ski holiday in La Plagne, your mind probably conjures images of epic downhill runs, cosy chalets, and après-ski festivities. But here's a secret for you that the ski instructors might not be so quick to tell you! Ski holidays aren't just about skiing! There's a wealth of other activities to explore, and ways to spend your next snowy winter break. After all, would it be a true Alpine ski holiday without a visit to a local Spa and a dip in an Alpine hot tub? I personally, think not!

But one of the ever popular ski holiday activities, especially for families is snowshoeing. Whilst it’s always been popular, it exploded over the Covid lockdown years, when the ski lifts were shut but people could still hike and walk and explore their local ski areas. Suddenly, the shops were stripped of all snow shoes as adventurers and families headed out into the local mountains to explore the peaks on foot.

Now, even several years after Covid, we see a continued interest in snowshoeing around La Plagne – and you might be wondering – why?! Why is snowshoeing in La Plagne so popular? Well, I’m here to answer all your questions and to also show you why taking your children out on snow shoes this winter might be the perfect activity for all the family.

Beginner and non-skiing activities in ski resorts

Ski resorts are no longer exclusively reserved for skiers and snowboarders. They've evolved into family-friendly winter wonderlands with activities for all ages and interests. Whether you're a beginner, a non-skier, or just looking to diversify your winter experiences, snowshoeing might be the perfect fit.

What is snowshoeing?

Also called snow raquettes, snowshoeing is a delightful winter activity that involves strapping on specially designed footwear that allows you to walk on snow without sinking. It's like walking on fluffy clouds while surrounded by pristine snow-covered landscapes.

They work by distributing your weight over a larger surface area, stopping your feet sinking and helping you to walk stably on the surface of the snow. They work on a simple principle of physics: increasing the area over which your weight is spread reduces the pressure exerted on the snow, making it easier to stay on the surface.

A La Plagne snowshoe trip won’t break the bank

I love taking my kids snowshoeing because it’s fairly cheap! Compared to skiing or snowboarding, riding the La Plagne bobsleigh or ski doo trips, the cost of renting snowshoes and hitting the trails is minimal. So, it's a budget-friendly way to enjoy the snowy splendour of La Plagne.

You have 2 options: 1) to rent or buy snow shoes and head out on your own to explore or 2) to book an excursion with a guide, and the snow shoes will be provided for you. Whilst you can quickly get to grips with snowshoeing and head out on your own, I’d always recommend heading out for the first time with a guide. Not only will they be able to show you some of the best trails and scenic La Plagne spots, but they are also super knowledgeable about the area and will be able to point out things like the names of the mountain peaks, animal tracks and types of trees and other Alpine flowers along your hike.

Snowshoeing is a great outdoor family winter activity

One of the best things about a family snowshoe adventure around La Plagne is that snowshoeing is pretty inclusive. By this, I mean that it's an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels, making it an excellent choice for family bonding. Whether your kids are little explorers or teenagers looking for adventure, snowshoeing is something everyone can participate in and savour together.

Snowshoeing is a sustainable snow sports activity

As a responsible traveller, you'll be pleased to know that snowshoeing is an eco-friendly activity. Unlike some winter sports that require extensive infrastructure, grooming or petrol-fueled vehicles. Snowshoeing has minimal impact on the environment. You'll be able to experience the pristine beauty of La Plagne while leaving only footprints in the snow.

Is learning to walk with snow shoes hard for beginners?

Not at all.

Snowshoeing is incredibly beginner-friendly, and you’ll pick it up pretty fast. The guides always say: “if you can walk, you can snowshoe”. Whilst, like with most things, there are little tricks you can learn and knacks to angling your feet for the most comfort, La Plagne snowshoeing is all about taking leisurely strolls through the snow, soaking in the scenery, and enjoying the peacefulness of the mountains. Plus, rental shops in La Plagne provide easy-to-follow instructions to ensure a smooth start.

Is snowshoeing good for kids?

Yes, it's fantastic for kids – of all ages! Snowshoeing combines adventure and playfulness, making it an excellent choice for youngsters. Children will be enchanted by the snowy landscapes, and it's a wonderful way to introduce them to the joys of the outdoors.

There really isn’t an age limit or minimum age to this activity. In fact, my children are in the local school, and the youngest classes, from the age of 3, will head out for snowshoe adventures for their afternoon activity. The kids get smaller, appropriate-sized snow shoes, which are usually a little softer, and easier for them to use. My kids’ and the group of school kids had a fantastic time, and my top tip would be to give your kids time to explore under their own steam: to find animal tracks, snow slides to play on and roll down and also, don’t forget to take some snacks and water. You will work up a thirst!

How fit do you need to be to go snowshoeing?

You might be concerned or put off when you see experienced skiers and snowboarders heading off to explore the La Plagne back country on their snowshoes but don’t worry! Snowshoeing is a low-impact activity and customisable to your fitness level. You can choose trails that match your family's abilities, from gentle walks to more challenging routes. It's all about enjoying the fresh mountain air at your own pace.

How much does a snowshoe experience cost?

Compared to the cost of lift passes and ski equipment, snowshoeing is a budget-friendly activity. Rental prices for snowshoes are generally reasonable, and many resorts, including La Plagne, offer guided snowshoe tours for a modest fee. It's an affordable way to explore the winter wonderland.

You can rent snowshoe gear from any of the ElPro altitude village shops, or Decathlon in Plagne 1800, where they are also featuring the sustainable Evvo snowshoes that have been designed in partnership with Michelin to create snowshoes that are more comfortable, easier to walk in and more environmentally friendly. The Evvo snowshoes are available for rent at just 8€ per person for a ½ day, but also from most ski schools or ski rental shops in each of the La Plagne villages.

You can also book a guide with Decathlon or ElPro at only 30€ for 2hr 45 mins exploration, be aware that the minimum booking age is 10 years old for this excursion.

Where in La Plagne can you explore with snowshoes?

La Plagne is a snowshoer's paradise with an array of trails that wind through forests, meadows, and mountains. If you’re looking to head off on your own to explore for the first time, I’d recommend heading off on one of the marked foot paths.

Some highlights include the Champagny-le-Haut area, where you can meander through breathtaking alpine scenery, and the Doux du Praz plateau, above Plagne Soleil, which offers stunning panoramic views. Exploring these pristine landscapes on snowshoes is an experience you won't forget.
