Top guide on how to find a family-friendly restaurant

Getting your entire family to gather for a meal can be challenging because everyone is busy with work, school, or whatever activity most of the year. This is why the time you spend together on a La Plagne family ski holiday is the perfect opportunity for quality time together.

As a mother of two small boys, I know how challenging it can be to convince kids to try anything new, particularly in a setting away from home. However, going out to eat is a terrific way to encourage children to take chances on a fresh meal and figure out new menu interests.

Additionally, dining out is ideal for kids to practice their manners and social skills. Children can show off what they've learned at home and get better when eating out. Interacting with restaurant staff is also a fantastic method for kids to learn social cues and practice communication.

7 Top tips on how to find La Plagne's family-friendly restaurants

Taking the kids out to eat at a family-friendly restaurant can be enjoyable. Or, it can turn into a straight-up nightmare!

A good restaurant choice might mean the difference between a lovely family outing and an hour of scolding your children, followed by a hasty bill payment and a quick exit without dessert. For this reason, parents heading out on ski holidays often spend a lot of time researching/worrying about which are the most family-friendly restaurants.

So what qualities should you consider while picking a family-friendly restaurant? Typically, La Plagne's family-friendly restaurants will have some or all of the below points for you. These are the points I have looked for before making my top 5 La Plagne family-friendly restaurants list.

1. High chairs and booster seats

This is a requirement for every family-friendly restaurant that welcomes children. Before you put your child in the high chair that has been provided, make sure that it is secure, easy to clean, and already clean!

A booster seat is a terrific way for youngsters to reach the tables if they are too large for a high chair. Also, being up higher than usual gives them a sense of importance.

2. Toilet amenities and baby changing stations

Baby-changing amenities are needed for any family-friendly restaurant. And you'll know this, especially if you've ever had to change your child's nappy on your lap or the bathroom floor!

A good restaurant needs to have baby changing stations, nappy bins, and toilets wide enough to allow pushchair access. Those that go the extra mile will also have smaller toilets, lower sinks for hand washing or steps so little kids can reach the taps.

3. Accessibility for pushchairs

There should be enough room in the restaurant that claims to be family-friendly for strollers and pushchairs. This means that:

  • the aisle leading to the entryway
  • the counter
  • the dining area
  • and the restrooms

Should be wide enough and free of obstructions. Furniture shouldn't be arranged near one another. Additionally, a ramp or lift should be included if the restaurant has many floors or levels of seating. The ramps should be safely sloped since they become hazardous or difficult to use if they are overly steep – especially if you're also in ski boots!

Pushchairs should also be able to fit comfortably in the lifts.

4. Child-friendly menus

Whilst children may be content to eat the appetisers, sides, and leftovers from their parents' plates, it is really nice to head somewhere that has a special kids' menu. Good children's menus should offer a variety of main dishes, deserts and drinks.

Having two kids of my own, I know how picky kids can be! Loving something one day, hating it the next. Children require more choices for their meals because they are so unreliable!

Bright menus with pictures are a terrific way to engage children in the experience.

Parents of allergic children are, of course, looking for the reassurance of vegetarian, gluten-free, or dairy-free menus. Still, it's always smart to phone ahead and find out what's available.

Jens Top Top: With the price of a lot of family-friendly children's menus topping 15€ per child, it can be pricey heading out for lunch on a ski holiday. So I have a couple of tricks:

  1. Order 1 kids' meal for them to share, plus an extra portion of chips. This is plenty for my 2 boys, 4 and 6 years old.
  2. Order a pizza for me and share it with them both, plus a portion of chips. The pizzas in Europe are massive and more than enough for me to share with 2 small children.

The best La Plagne family-friendly restaurants will have no problem with you sharing meals with your children like this.

5. Activities for children

From a box of toys in the back corner to an indoor play area and outside jungle gyms, family-friendly restaurants can include various play areas. But spaces like this are often in short supply in Alpine ski resorts.

Children adore places they can colour. Even though the meals at one restaurant weren't noteworthy, my kids kept asking to return since they had fantastic colouring pages. They also loved another place with a box full of children's books that kept them occupied at the table.

Jen's Top Tip – One of the best things we have done on a ski day is to take a card game with us. Super easy to carry and fairly indestructible! Our current favourites are Uno, Dobble or standard playing cards.

6. Privacy and restaurant booths

A restaurant with booths is best since they provide more privacy and reduce the likelihood of children leaving their seats. Although kids need to be aware of the level of their voices, you can bet that you and other diners will be if the neighbouring table is only a few inches away.

7. Special offers for children's meals

Eating out in ski resorts can cost a fortune. Especially with kids who may or may not eat what you order for them! You risk having your food budget sucked dry if you take your entire group out to dine.

But finding some restaurants that have:

  • Daily specials
  • Kids' meal deals
  • Discounted kid-friendly menus on designated days

Can make all the difference.

Taking advantage of these offers will lower your meal costs, meaning you can take your family out to dine more frequently.

La Plagne's top 5 family-friendly restaurants

Based on all the above points, these are my absolute top 5 family-friendly restaurants in La Plagne.

  1. Le Bonnet, Bellecôte. Great quality, fast food service. On the piste so good for skiing but not for pedestrians or pushchairs.
  2. Le Floe, Plagne Centre. Great food and lots of toys and games for kids. Also accessible by lift and has lots of space to park a buggy or pushchair.
  3. Le Vega, Plagne Centre. Large indoor space and outdoor terrace, plenty of space for pushchairs. The good kids' menu is reasonably priced.
  4. Le Forperet, Montalbert. As well as great food, this restaurant is also part farm. So your kids might be lucky enough to spy on a calf, lamb or donkey! On the slopes, so there is easy ski access.
  5. La Bodega, Belle Plagne. Tapas-style menu, which is perfect for a family dining and sharing evening. They do also have a kids' menu. Plenty of space for buggies, but there are some steps to get down with the pushchair, so it will need carrying. Not open for lunch, but open in the evenings.

And that's how to find child-friendly restaurants in La Plagne!

Looking online doesn't necessarily reveal what amenities a restaurant will provide for children. So, use the chance to inquire about the amenities and facilities offered and to voice any specific requirements when you phone in advance to make a reservation.

Asking the right questions informs you of what to bring and informs the restaurant staff of what matters to you as their customer.

Avoid establishments with lousy customer service reviews and likewise, if you have a wonderful family-friendly meal, consider leaving a review to assist other parents.

Let me know how you get on – did you try any of these recommendations? Are there any I should add to the list?

Happy dining!
