The Ultimate Guide to MoonBiking in La Plagne

A leading rider speeds down a snow-covered trail in La Plagne on a MoonBike, followed closely by a group of fellow moonbikers. Their headlights cut through the snowy evening, lighting up the path as they explore the winter landscape.

A New Way to Explore the Slopes

You love skiing, but sometimes you want to mix things up. Maybe you're looking for an adrenaline rush beyond the pistes, or perhaps someone in your group doesn’t ski but still wants a snow-filled adventure. That’s where MoonBiking comes in.

As someone who lives in La Plagne, I’m always looking for new ways to enjoy the mountains, and I recently tried MoonBiking with Oxygène. I can honestly say it’s one of the most exciting activities I’ve done here. Silent, powerful, and easy to handle, these electric snowbikes offer a totally different way to explore the resort.

If you’re wondering whether MoonBiking is worth it, how it works, or if it’s suitable for families, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What is MoonBiking?

MoonBiking is a relatively new winter activity, and La Plagne is one of the few places where you can try it. It involves riding a fully electric snowbike – think of it as a cross between a snowmobile and an e-bike. Unlike traditional snowmobiles, MoonBikes are lightweight, completely silent, and much easier to control.

With no fuel engine noise, you can glide through snowy landscapes in near silence, making it an eco-friendly and peaceful way to explore the mountains. The bikes have a simple throttle-and-brake system, making them accessible even for beginners.

Where Can You Go MoonBiking in La Plagne?

MoonBiking is available with two main providers in La Plagne:

  • Oxygène Ski & Snowboard School – I did my MoonBiking session with Oxygène and had an amazing experience. Their instructors guide you through everything, and the session takes place on a dedicated off-piste area, ensuring a safe and fun ride.
  • ElPro – Another great option, ElPro also offers MoonBiking experiences in La Plagne. They have similar sessions, with guided rides through snowy trails. They also have a taster session for 15 minutes which is 25€.

Both companies provide all the necessary equipment, and booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak weeks.

What to Expect from a MoonBiking Session

A typical MoonBiking experience lasts around an hour and takes place in the late afternoon or evening, once the ski lifts have closed.

When I tried MoonBiking with Oxygène, the session started with a quick briefing on how to control the bike. The throttle is on the handlebar, just like on an e-bike or scooter, and the braking system is straightforward. Within minutes, we were off, following our guide through snowy trails.

Riding the MoonBike felt intuitive – far easier than I expected. Unlike skiing or snowboarding, where balance is key, you sit comfortably on the bike, making it accessible even for non-skiers. The most exciting part was riding through untouched snow, with only the sound of the wind and the crunch of snow beneath the tyres.

Is MoonBiking Suitable for Families?

If you're travelling with kids, you might be wondering if they can join in. MoonBiking does have an age restriction, with most providers requiring riders to be at least 16 years old.

For younger children, MoonBiking isn't an option, but there are plenty of other exciting activities in La Plagne, such as tobogganing, ice skating, or dog sledding. If you're looking for an alternative adventure that the whole family can do together, a snowshoeing excursion or a ride on the Colorado Luge track might be a better choice.

How to Book a MoonBiking Session in La Plagne

Booking a MoonBiking session in La Plagne is straightforward, but with limited availability each evening, it’s best to reserve your spot in advance.

Oxygène offers MoonBiking sessions for €110 per person, which includes the bike, helmet, and guidance from an instructor. Each group is limited to a maximum of six people, ensuring a personalised experience. Sessions take place between 5:15 pm and 9:00 pm, after the ski lifts have closed, so you can enjoy the quiet slopes under the stars.

No prior experience is needed, making it an ideal activity for both skiers and non-skiers. However, riders must be at least 16 years old to participate.

A group of moonbikers rides through a snowy forest in La Plagne at dusk, their headlights illuminating the falling snow. The riders, dressed in winter gear and helmets, carve a path through the deep powder on their MoonBikes, enjoying an exhilarating nighttime adventure.

To book, visit the Oxygène website, call their office in La Plagne, or drop by one of their ski school locations in the resort. Spaces fill up quickly, especially during peak weeks, so securing your spot early is recommended.

MoonBiking: A Perfect Activity for Skiers and Non-Skiers Alike

One of the best things about MoonBiking is that it’s an activity both skiers and non-skiers can enjoy together. While skiing and snowboarding require lessons and practice, MoonBiking is easy to pick up in minutes, making it a great option for those who don’t ski but still want to explore the mountains.

For groups with mixed abilities – whether it's family members, friends, or partners – MoonBiking offers a way to experience the slopes side by side, without needing to be on skis. It’s less physically demanding than skiing, requires no special skills, and lets everyone enjoy the thrill of the mountains in a completely new way. Whether you're taking a break from skiing or looking for an activity that brings skiers and non-skiers together, MoonBiking is an adventure worth trying.

Tips for the Best MoonBiking Experience

Dressing appropriately is key to enjoying your MoonBiking session. Since you’ll be sitting rather than constantly moving, you might feel the cold more than when skiing. Wear your usual ski gear, including warm layers, gloves, and a good jacket, to stay comfortable throughout the ride.

If you have the option, book an evening session. There’s something truly special about gliding through the snow under the stars, with the mountains quiet and untouched after the day’s skiing has finished. The atmosphere at night makes the experience even more magical.

Lastly, listen to the guide. Although MoonBiking is easy to pick up, following their advice will help you get the most out of it. They’ll show you the best way to handle the bike, navigate the terrain, and make the most of your time on the slopes.

That's La Plagne & MoonBiking

MoonBiking in La Plagne is more than just a fun activity – it’s a completely new way to experience the mountains. Whether you're an adrenaline seeker, a non-skier looking for adventure, or just want to try something different, it's an experience you won’t forget.

See you on the slopes.
