As a family that lives in a ski resort, we understand the excitement and anticipation that comes with planning a memorable family ski holiday. Whether you're hitting the slopes for the first time or you're a seasoned skier, finding the perfect accommodation that fits your preferences and budget is crucial.

In this guide, I'll walk you through five expert steps to secure budget-friendly ski chalet holidays without compromising on quality. 1. Group Up and Share

Gathering friends or family to book a larger accommodation can significantly reduce the cost per person. This strategy allows you to consider options that might have seemed too pricey if booking alone or as a couple. Imagine a spacious chalet with a fireplace, kitchen, and living area where you can host dinner parties, game nights, or simply relax after a day on the slopes. The key here is to plan early to ensure everyone's schedules align and to secure your ideal spot before it gets snapped up. Plus, shared accommodations often come with amenities like laundry facilities or private hot tubs, offering additional savings and convenience.

This is also a great idea for those travelling with children if you can buddy up with families and similar aged children.

2. Look for Package Deals

Whilst it is tempting to set out to plan the perfect DIY ski trip, taking control of every small element, package deals can be a game-changer! Not only can they save you a heavy load of planning time, but also money as well. Bundling accommodations with ski passes, equipment rentals, or even meals. This not only simplifies the planning process but can also unlock discounts that are not available when booking separately. Travel agencies, tour operators, and even some resorts offer tailored packages to suit various needs and budgets. When exploring package deals, pay attention to the details to ensure they match your expectations, such as the quality of rental equipment or the proximity of your accommodation to the ski lifts.

3. Consider All-Inclusive Holidays

All-inclusive ski holidays can offer incredible value, especially for families or groups. Beyond just meals and accommodation, these packages sometimes include ski passes, lessons, and entertainment. The upfront cost might seem higher, but when you factor in the convenience and total expenses of eating out or purchasing passes daily, the savings can add up. Plus, it's a stress-free way to enjoy your holiday without worrying about budgeting for every meal or activity.

All-inclusive ski holidays often include:

  • Accommodation
  • Flights and transfers
  • Meals
  • Drinks and après ski activities or entertainments
  • Lift passes
  • Ski lessons

4. Stay Alert with Newsletters and Social Media

Many ski resorts and travel platforms offer loyalty schemes, newsletters, and reward points programs that can significantly reduce your accommodation costs. By signing up for newsletters and joining loyalty programs, you'll receive exclusive offers, early-bird discounts, and even a free night's stay.

Watch for special deals related to family ski holidays and accommodation to maximise your winter getaway. For example, when writing this article, several local ski companies offer discounted lift passes and free children's spaces for specific weeks. I regularly email these offers to my newsletter followers, so the first newsletter to gins up for is the That’s La Plagne newsletter!

Then, of course, collecting rewards points from any suppliers, or better known, collecting points with travel or credit cards. Often called “Travel Hacking,” collecting points and air miles can be a good way to score discounted accommodation or free flights and upgrades.

Here's some more information on ski holiday hacking without signing up for credit cards or spending money!

5. Leverage French Immobiliers and Local Estate Agents

For those seeking an authentic experience in La Plagne or any ski resort, consider enlisting the help of a local French estate agent, known as an “immobillier.” These experts have insider knowledge of the best accommodation deals in the area. Immobilliers work directly with the owners of apartments and chalets, cutting out the middlemen, and so can offer you the lowest prices for your ski holiday accommodation. They can help you find hidden gems that might not be advertised online, giving you access to options that suit your budget while ensuring you get the most value for your money.

Be aware that there are some differences with accommodation rented by immobilliers:

  • You will pay a damage deposit, often a percentage of the total cost.
  • There is often a cleaning fee for the end of your stay. You can opt to do the cleaning yourself or pay the amount to have their housekeeping team do it.
  • You will need to strip your bedding and take the bins out on departure.

6. Use Booking.com

Booking.com is renowned for its wide range of accommodations and flexible booking options. The platform's “book now, pay later” feature, coupled with free cancellation on many properties, offers flexibility and peace of mind. It's ideal for those who prefer to keep their options open or might need to adjust plans. Regular users can also benefit from the Genius loyalty program, which offers additional discounts and perks.

7. Consider Airbnb

Whilst Airbnb has contributed to over-tourism and difficulties in finding long-term accommodation for those who work and live in touristic areas, there is no denying that if you are looking for cheaper ski holiday accommodation, Airbnb will be on your list.

Airbnb has revolutionised the way we travel, and ski holidays are no exception. From charming cabins to spacious apartments, you'll find a wide range of options to suit your family's size and preferences. What's good about Airbnb is the ability to filter your search based on amenities, location, and price, helping you snag a self-catered ski chalet that fits your budget perfectly.

8. Opt for Slightly Out-of-the-Way Locations

Choosing accommodations a little bit away from the main action can lead to significant savings. Many resorts offer free or low-cost shuttle services to the lifts, making it easy to access the slopes without the premium price tag of ski-in/ski-out locations. This option often leads to discovering hidden gems and quieter spots away from the crowds, enhancing the relaxation aspect of your holiday.

In my home ski resort of La Plagne, for example, I recommend looking at the lower villages of Montalbert, Montchavin, Les Coches and Champagny. All of these are connected with high-speed lifts to the high-altitude ski slopes and have some amazing accommodations at much lower prices than the mountain peak villages.

9. Vacation Rentals by Owner and Local Ski Resort Facebook Groups

Exploring vacation rentals by owner through platforms or ski resort local Facebook groups can uncover some of the best deals. Owners directly advertising their properties often offer competitive rates to avoid agency fees. These groups can also provide insights into the local area, tips, and even last-minute availability directly from the community. Always perform due diligence by checking reviews or seeking recommendations within the group to ensure a trustworthy and pleasant stay.
