What is Ski Insurance?

Before you embark on your next European ski holiday – or head skiing anywhere in the world! – one crucial item you must pack is ski travel insurance. It is quite literally the most important thing you need in your ski bag. After all, you never know what is going to happen.

Ski insurance is a specialised form of travel insurance designed to provide coverage for the unique risks and activities associated with skiing vacations. It offers protection against a wide range of unforeseen circumstances that could arise while you hit the slopes, ensuring you can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the various aspects of ski holiday travel insurance, helping you make an informed decision that suits your needs.

What Does Ski Insurance Cover?

Ski insurance offers comprehensive coverage for various scenarios that are specific to skiing vacations. Here are the key aspects that ski insurance typically covers:

Medical Expenses: Accidents on the slopes can happen, and ski insurance provides coverage for emergency medical expenses, including medical treatment, hospital stays, and ambulance services.

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Equipment: Ski insurance protects your ski gear, such as skis, snowboards, and boots, in case they are lost, stolen, or damaged during your trip.

Cancellation or Curtailment: If unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut short your ski holiday, ski insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable trip costs.

Avalanche Delay: In the unfortunate event of an avalanche delaying your travel plans, ski insurance may cover additional expenses incurred due to the delay.

Piste Closure: Ski insurance can compensate you for the loss of ski days if the ski resort closes its pistes due to unfavorable weather or other reasons.

Other Eventualities: Depending on the policy, ski insurance may also cover personal liability, legal expenses, and search and rescue costs.

How Can I Find Cheap Ski Insurance?

Finding affordable ski insurance without compromising on coverage is possible with a few smart strategies:

Compare Quotes: Shop around and compare quotes from different insurance providers to find the best value for money. Many comparison websites can help you easily compare multiple policies side by side.

Choose the Right Coverage: Assess your needs and choose a policy that covers the activities you plan to participate in during your ski holiday. Opt for a policy with a reasonable excess to reduce the premium.

Multi-Trip or Annual Policies: If you are a frequent traveler, consider multi-trip or annual policies, as they can be more cost-effective than single-trip policies for multiple vacations.

Beware of Add-ons: While additional coverage options can be tempting, evaluate if you truly need them to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Does Regular Travel Insurance Cover Skiing?

Standard or regular travel insurance typically does not cover skiing, snowboarding, or other winter sports activities. If you plan to hit the slopes during your holiday, it's essential to check whether skiing is included in your policy. If not, you will need to purchase specialised ski insurance to ensure adequate coverage.

A company I really like and recommend often to ski workers is SafetyWing. They specialise in longer-term insurance for remote workers or digital nomads. So, if you are heading out to do a ski season, then Saftywing is worth checking out for your ski season.

Another good company is Au Vieux Camper. It's set up as a club for insurance, an I have a lot of ex-pat friends in resort that use this. In fact, one of them was caught in an avalanche in 2020, and this insurance covered everything he needed from start to finish.

If you are older, over 70, and heading skiing, then have a look at Insure My Trip which has customised plans for senior travellers.

It's also worth checking out the Carte Neige, specifically for ski holiday insurance. You can buy it by the day or for the whole ski season, and it can be a great compliment to your current holiday insurance provider.

Jens Top Tip: Check with your bank, as sometimes you have winter sports cover as part of a packaged bank account.

Does the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card cover skiing?

As a UK national visiting La Plagne, you have the advantage of using the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to access medical treatment. The EHIC guarantees you receive the same healthcare benefits as French residents. However, do bear in mind that the EHIC remains valid only until its expiry date. Upon expiration, you should promptly apply for the new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

Both the EHIC and GHIC cards grant you access to state-provided medical treatment, ensuring you receive care on par with that offered to French nationals.

However, they do not cover the cost of rescue from the ski slopes. So relying purely on the EHIC card is not a good idea.

Does Ski Insurance Have an Age Limit?

The age limit for ski insurance varies among providers. While some insurers offer ski cover for all ages, others may have upper age limits. It is crucial to read the policy details or contact the insurance provider to verify age-related restrictions before purchasing ski insurance.

Can I Get Ski Insurance if I Have a Pre-existing Condition?

Obtaining ski insurance with a preexisting medical condition is possible, but the conditions and agreements will, of course, change from insurance provider to provider. It’s also likely to cost you more because insurers judge that you are more likely to make a claim.

Therefore, some insurers will provide coverage for preexisting conditions, while others may exclude them. Make sure to disclose any preexisting conditions when applying for ski insurance to ensure you have the appropriate coverage.

That’s La Plagne and how to find the right ski travel insurance

As you gear up for your ski holiday in La Plagne or any other European ski destination, securing the right ski holiday travel insurance is crucial. It provides essential protection against unforeseen events, ensuring you can focus on enjoying the thrilling slopes without worries. Understand what ski insurance covers, compare quotes, and choose a policy that suits your needs and budget. Remember, a small investment in ski insurance can make a significant difference in your overall travel experience, leaving you with cherished memories of an unforgettable ski vacation.
