What happens if I have a ski injury?

In winter, the La Plagne medical centres operate two sections: one side for general illnesses and one side for ski accidents and injuries. As you can imagine, during the winter, the La Plagne medical centres see a lot of ski-related injuries. They are highly adept and efficient at managing these medical emergencies. You can get X-rays and results within 30 minutes – depending on the number of people in the waiting room.

Suppose you need further treatment or surgery for a broken bone, for example, they will organise the ambulance transfer down to the hospital in Bourg St Maurice, which is about 40 minutes to 1 hour away at the bottom of the valley.

Helicopter transfers will be organised for emergencies and time-sensitive injuries, getting you to the hospital in minutes.

You do need to be aware that you will be asked to pay for the ambulance or helicopter transfers upfront. This is normal in France. Keep the receipts to present to your travel insurance which you then need to check your level of coverage.

How UK Nationals Can Use EHIC Cards When Visiting Doctors in France

If you're a UK national visiting La Plagne, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) when seeking medical treatment. The EHIC ensures that you receive the same healthcare benefits as French residents. However, it's essential to note that the EHIC is valid until its expiry date. After that, you must apply for the new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

An EHIC or GHIC card entitles you to state-provided medical treatment and will be provided on the same terms as a French National.

How Does Your Travel Insurance Work at a French Doctors

When visiting a French doctor in La Plagne, it's essential to understand how your travel insurance works. Most travel insurance policies cover medical expenses incurred abroad, including doctor visits. Ensure you have a comprehensive travel insurance plan covering medical emergencies, including doctor consultations, medication, and potential hospitalisation. Keep your insurance details handy when visiting the doctors in La Plagne.

If you need ongoing care, e.g., an ambulance trip to the hospital, call your travel insurance as early as possible, as they can usually liaise directly with the medical team to cover the costs. Otherwise, you must pay them out of your pocket and then claim the expenses back, depending on your travel insurance.

Does my travel insurance cover skiing?

This is a question I hear a lot, and basically, you need to check your specific travel insurance policy as they all cover different sports and travel. Typically, skiing is classified as an extreme sport, so you may need to add additional insurance to your general holiday travel insurance.

You can find out more about ski holiday insurance in this comprehensive guide.

What does the Carré Neige cover?

The Carré Neige, or Carte Neige, is insurance created specifically to cover skiing and other snow activities.

You can purchase this by the day, for example, if you are here for a week ski holiday, purchasing a 6-day lift pass, you can also get a 6-day Carré Neige. The Carré Neige costs €3,10 per day or €18,60 for the week (at the time of writing this) and covers skiing and all winter sports.

If you are working a ski season, you can buy a Carré Neige for the ski season, which costs €49 for the year.

You can find out more about the Carré Neige here.

JENS TOP TIP: If you purchase the Carré Neige, keep it with your lift pass in your salopette pocket. Then, if you are unfortunate enough to have a ski accident, you will have your insurance proof immediately to hand to show the piste assistance and the doctor at the medical centre.
