If, like me, you’re always looking for the perfect family ski destination, then you've probably heard about La Plagne. And I’m lucky enough to call this fab ski resort home! But let's clear up the confusion right from the start – La Plagne, as a whole commune, is not a glacier. However, part of the La Plagne ski area is up on a Glacier. It is a spectacular part of the ski resort, high in the French Alps at an altitude of over 3000 metres. Access to the La Plagne Glacier offers some of Europe’s most breathtaking views and the highest skiing experiences in Europe.
What's new in La Plagne for winter 2023/24
Now, let's dive into the exciting updates for the upcoming winter season in La Plagne. A significant change is in the air—the access to the La Plagne glacier is shifting. Say farewell to skiing on the Bellecôte glacier, a feature that has graced the region since 1978, providing 45 years of extreme high-altitude skiing fun. Instead, the action will now be on the Chiaupe Glacier.
Why the switch, you ask? The answer lies in the sobering reality of climate change. Rising global temperatures have destabilised these glacial areas, with the lift lines literally moving! To ensure safety and sustainability, the new lift line will be anchored to the solid bedrock of the mountain rather than relying solely on permafrost.
The La Plagne team has been busy during this transition. They've removed 21 ski lift towers and 14 electricity pylons from the Bellecôte Glacier. Plus, they've relocated Alpine flowers and protected plants, like the delicate Alpine Rose, to safe areas where they can continue to bloom undisturbed.
But the most exciting news you’re all waiting for is the new Glacier ski lift and access. Introducing the new 10-seater gondola. This impressive lift will transport a whopping 2700 people per hour on a 10-minute journey from the Roche de Mio station to the summit of the Chiaupe glacier.

The difference between the Bellecôte and Chiaupe Glaciers
One question that often arises is the difference between the Bellecôte Glacier and the Chiaupe Glacier. The main difference for skiers is the altitude distinction. The La Plagne Bellecôte Glacier reaches a height of 3417 metres, whereas the Chiaupe Glacier peaks at 3080 metres.
However, this altitude distinction makes little difference for La Plagne skiers because the Chiaupe Glacier elevation ensures reliable snow cover throughout the ski season.
When does the La Plagne Chiaupe Glacier open?
The La Plagne glacier is open for skiing from 16th December 2023, to April 27th 2024. However, remember that the Glacier lifts and skiing may temporarily close during bad weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, high winds, or rain. Safety always comes first!
How can you access the La Plagne Glacier?
The access to the La Plagne Glacier and skiing on the Chiaupe Glacier is still from the same area as in previous years. The opening station at the Roche de Mio hasn’t changed, although the plan is to redevelop this station for winter 2025.
Here's what you need to know:
Skiers vs. Non-Skiers or Pedestrians: You’re in luck if you're a skier. The new 10-seater gondola makes reaching the glacier a breeze. Head up to the Roche de Mio peak via any of the chairlifts that arrive at this peak and take the new Glacier Gondola.
But what about non-skiers or pedestrians? Well, they can also access this snowy wonderland! The gondola is equipped to accommodate everyone. All pedestrians and non-skiers will also need lift passes to take the lifts to this point. However, it's essential to note that toddlers or babies might find the pressure changes at this altitude uncomfortable, so it's advisable to wait until they're a bit older to experience the glacier.
Pedestrians need to get to Bellecôte on the free shuttle bus, take the Gondola from Bellecôte and ride all the way up to Roche de Mio. Then hop out and take the Glacier Gondola up to the Chiaupe Glacier peak. Altogether, the bubble and Gondola will take about 30 – 40 mins, depending on how busy they are.

This exciting development includes ‘The 6ieme Ciel,' a snack stop styled like a traditional mountain refuge. There are also so many picnic tables outside, and it's the perfect place for an al fresco picnic lunch – it's one of the best picnic views in La Plagne!
