Location: Central, Convenient, and Pedestrian-Friendly
Unlike many restaurants in La Plagne that cater to skiers arriving straight off the slopes, Le Petit Comptoir is better suited for pedestrians. It’s situated in the heart of Plagne Centre, away from the snow-covered runs, and isn’t accessible on skis. This makes it a different choice in a ski resort where so much of the dining scene revolves around mountain-top eateries or piste-side venues.
For those staying in Plagne Centre, the restaurant is an easy walk from most accommodations. Its central location also means it’s convenient if you’re staying in one of the nearby villages, thanks to La Plagne’s efficient free bus system. The bus stop in Plagne Centre is just a few steps away, making Le Petit Comptoir a straightforward choice for an evening out.
One important note: the restaurant itself isn’t wheelchair-accessible due to high tables and bar stool-style seating. It shares facilities with other restaurants in Plagne Centre, using the public toilets in Plagne Centre. These are wheelchair-accessible and suitable for pushchairs, but there are no baby-changing facilities. It’s another reminder that this restaurant is best suited for adults or older children who can enjoy a more sophisticated dining experience. There are better restaurants around La Plagne for families and children.
Whether you’re arriving by foot or bus, Le Petit Comptoir offers a central location and a chilled escape from the typical ski resort hustle.
The Menu: Sophisticated Flavours with a Local Touch
Le Petit Comptoir is known for its small but expertly curated menu, which changes regularly to reflect the seasons and showcases fresh, local ingredients. Unlike sprawling menus that try to cater to every taste, this restaurant focuses on a few well-executed dishes. During our visit, the menu featured three starters, three mains, and three desserts, along with an optional cheese course – a true testament to quality over quantity.
Starters
We ordered all three starters to share, and each was a standout in its own right:
- Snails with garlic butter: A sophisticated twist on a French classic, these were perfectly tender and seasoned to highlight their rich flavour.
- Trout gravlax: This was my starter and it was delicious. The yuzu sauce was so fresh and zesty. A balance of citrus and herbs complemented the fish beautifully.
- Scallops in langoustine bisque: Luxuriously rich, this dish combines perfectly cooked scallops with a creamy, flavourful bisque. I couldn’t help dunking the fresh baguette in my friend’s dish!

Mains
For our mains, we chose:
- Guinea fowl with seasonal vegetables: A standout dish with tender meat and a deep, savoury sauce. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and seasoned, adding to the dish’s complexity.
- Steak with a red wine reduction: Cooked to perfection, the steak was accompanied by sides that made the dish feel both hearty and elegant. This was my dish and it was delicious – I finished every morsel. The only disappointment was that the steak knife was pretty blunt. So, even with perfectly cooked beef, it was difficult to cut up.
There was also a vegetarian risotto option on the menu, which we didn’t try this time, but it looked beautifully presented at neighbouring tables.

Desserts
We couldn’t say no to the desserts – so we ordered them all to try
- Chocolate praline tart: Rich and indulgent with a crisp base and velvety filling.
- Pineapple carpaccio: A surprisingly light and refreshing choice with bold flavours and a beautiful presentation. I think this was the winning dish for most of us this evening.
- Rum baba: This was the best I’ve ever had – soaked to perfection and the syrup was flavoured with rum but not overpowering. It’s not a dessert I would typically orer, but I would go back here for this dish alone!

The optional cheese plate was also excellent, featuring a selection of local cheeses that paired wonderfully with the wines.
Le Peiti Comptoir Wine List
A great meal deserves great wine, and Le Petit Comptoir doesn’t disappoint. The wine list is a carefully curated selection of French wines, with a particular focus on the Savoie region. The staff are knowledgeable and happy to help you choose the perfect bottle, whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a great pairing.
During our visit, we opted for two bottles of Chignin, a white wine from Savoie known for its crisp, aromatic qualities. It paired beautifully with both the seafood starters and our mains. We should have switched to some red for the mains, but we were enjoying the white too much. The wine list also features some excellent reds, including bottles from Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, as well as a few sparkling options if you’re in the mood to celebrate.
What stands out here is the care taken in selecting wines that elevate the meal without overwhelming it. Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or just dipping your toes into the world of French wines, you’ll feel at ease exploring the options.
If you’re unsure about what to order, don’t hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations – they’ll guide you based on your preferences and the dishes you’ve chosen.
Service: Attentive and Professional
The service at Le Petit Comptoir is everything you’d hope for in a fine-dining restaurant. The staff strike the perfect balance between being attentive and giving you the space to enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace. The waiter seemed to genuinely care that we were enjoying our meal, asking what our favourite dishes were and how the wine paired. All without being in our face or too much. From the warm welcome on arrival to the careful presentation of each dish, it’s clear that the team here takes pride in creating a memorable dining experience.
Our server was knowledgeable about both the menu and the wine list, offering helpful suggestions without being pushy. Each dish was introduced with a brief explanation of its ingredients and preparation, which added a personal touch to the meal.
Even on a busy evening, the staff managed to keep the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself, the service here makes you feel like a valued guest.
Pricing: Exceptional Value
For a fine dining experience in a ski resort, Le Petit Comptoir offers exceptional value. During our visit, we each enjoyed three courses, shared a cheese plate, and split two bottles of wine, all for €67 per person. Considering the quality of the food, the wine list, great service and the overall atmosphere, this is a fantastic price.
Ski resorts aren’t always known for their affordability when it comes to dining, but Le Petit Comptoir proves that you can enjoy a higher-end experience without breaking the bank. It’s the kind of place where you feel you’ve received real value for money – something that’s not always guaranteed in a ski resort setting.
