What is the Flocon Vert?
The Flocon Vert (Green Snowflake) is an award given to ski resorts that meet high standards of environmental sustainability. Created by Mountain Riders in 2011, this certification assesses resorts on criteria such as waste management, energy efficiency, water conservation, and social responsibility. It’s a big deal in the world of mountain tourism, encouraging resorts to protect their natural surroundings.
The Mountain Riders association officially unveiled this year’s Flocon Vert awards on June 6th for La Plagne and Arêches-Beaufort. Both resorts added their names to the list of 27 destinations with this prestigious award. Awarded for a period of 3 years, this Flocon is a positive first step to motivate the community and maintain a continuous improvement approach to La Plagne’s sustainability strategy.
Why Sustainability Matters in Ski Resorts
Ski resorts have a significant impact on the environment, from energy use to waste generation. Sustainable practices help preserve mountain areas’ natural beauty and ecological balance. They ensure that future generations can enjoy these landscapes just as we do now. Moreover, eco-conscious tourism is on the rise, with more visitors seeking destinations that prioritise the environment.
La Plagne’s Commitment to Sustainability
Even before participating in the Flocon Vert program, La Plagne had initiated broad, collaborative discussions among local authorities, the ski area, and the tourist office to create a sustainable future for the region. This collective effort led to the development of a solid sustainability strategy for La Plagne. All this was outlined in its first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report published in November 2022. The report, which will be updated annually, sets out strategic development axes that provide a solid foundation for advancing the area's sustainability vision, strategy, and action plan.
La Plagne’s Flocon Vert certification highlights its dedication to sustainability, accessibility, and community well-being. This award underscores the resort's commitment to creating a more sustainable and inclusive environment for all visitors and residents.
La Plagne has implemented several initiatives to earn the Flocon Vert:
- Energy-Efficient Infrastructure: Our resort has invested in energy-efficient buildings and ski lifts to reduce carbon emissions.
- Waste Management: La Plagne has implemented robust recycling programmes and initiatives to minimise waste, including reducing single-use plastics.
- Water Conservation: Measures are in place to monitor and conserve water usage, crucial for maintaining snow quality and supporting local ecosystems.
- Protecting Local Wildlife: Efforts to protect local wildlife and natural habitats include designated conservation areas and educational programmes for visitors.
La Plagne also works closely with local businesses and communities to promote sustainability, ensuring that our efforts benefit everyone who lives and works here. One significant challenge identified by both public and private stakeholders in La Plagne is the availability of housing. Which is seen as a major obstacle to employment throughout the resort. Efforts are underway to address this issue to ensure that those who work in La Plagne have access to suitable living conditions. As someone who lives (and works!) in La Plagne, I am super happy to see this issue be highlighted and addressed.
The Journey to Flocon Vert Certification
Getting the Flocon Vert certification was no easy task. La Plagne had to go through a thorough evaluation, showing just how dedicated we are to meeting and exceeding sustainability standards. This meant working closely with local stakeholders, constantly improving our practices, and tackling a variety of challenges along the way. The whole community's involvement was key to making this happen.
