Where to find birthday cakes in La Plagne
1. Local Patisseries and Bakeries
For those looking for a traditional cake made fresh in the mountains, start with the local patisseries:
- Montmayeur Bakery (Plagne Centre): Known for its artisan breads and pastries, Montmayeur is a solid choice for a birthday treat. While they don’t openly advertise custom cakes, it’s always worth asking. But they always have the classic French tarts, cakes and bakes that you can choose from.

- Les 3 G Bakery (Aime-la-Plagne): A classic French boulangerie offering fresh baked goods. Les 3 G Bakery may not specialise in birthday cakes, but their pastries and tarts can make excellent alternatives. This isn't one I have used myself, so whilst I know they are a good option, I can't personally tell you how delicious they are!
- Maison Rhubarbe: This standout option is perfect for those who want a bespoke and beautifully crafted cake. Maison Rhubarbe is renowned for its quality and attention to detail, so be sure to order well in advance. They make lovely bespoke cakes and bakes.
2. Supermarkets and Convenience Stores
If you’re after something quick and easy:
- Sherpa and Spar: Both supermarkets have very small confectionary sections, but I wouldn't recommend them for your classic birthday cake. Maybe a good option for ice cream or desserts options.
- E.Leclerc (Aime-la-Plagne): A larger supermarket in Aime La Plagne in the valley. It has a more extensive bakery section. Perfect if you’re willing to venture out of the resort for a wider selection. I've picked up cartoon-style cakes for the kids here as well as the more bespoke bakes from their bakery section. We had a delicious Paris Breast cake for a friend's birthday this year and this Strawberry cake was from there for my husbands 40th this year as well – delicious.

There's some more information on the La Plagne supermarkets here.
3. Delivery Services
For ultimate convenience, consider having a cake delivered:
- Votre Gateau Online: Personalised cakes that arrive beautifully decorated. I’ve used Votre Gateau twice for my kids’ birthdays. We got this Lego cake recently, and it was a hit. I love that you order the cake size for the amount of people you're expecting. They are pricier than some options, but for peace of mind, they are perfect. Just remember to allow an extra day for delivery as they have arrived later than expected both times.

4. If You’re Staying in a Catered Ski Chalet
Here’s an often-overlooked gem: if you’re staying in a catered chalet, your hosts or chef are almost always happy to bake a birthday cake. Most include it as part of the service or for a small additional fee. It’s a stress-free option, and the cakes are homemade, fresh, and tailored to your preferences. Just give them some notice to plan ahead.

Alternatives to traditional cakes
Not every birthday needs a standard sponge cake. Here are some creative alternatives:
- Cupcakes or Mini Pastries: Many bakeries and supermarkets offer individual-sized treats like cupcakes, macarons, or éclairs. These are perfect for sharing with a group.
- French Specialties: Why not embrace local culture with a tarte aux fruits, mille-feuille, or even a decadent chocolate fondant? These make for sophisticated and delicious alternatives.
- Frozen Desserts: Check supermarkets like Sherpa or Spar for frozen desserts, which can be a lifesaver for last-minute celebrations.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even assemble your own “cake” from pastries or doughnuts stacked high for a fun and creative twist.
Catering to dietary requirements
Celebrating a birthday should be inclusive, so here’s how to ensure everyone can enjoy the treats:
- Gluten-Free Options: Maison Rhubarbe and some bakeries may offer gluten-free cakes—call ahead to confirm. Alternatively, supermarkets often stock gluten-free baking mixes if you’re making your own.
- Dairy-Free or Vegan Cakes: This can be trickier, but delivery services like Votre Gateau often have options for special dietary needs.
- Nut-Free Options: Always check with the bakery to avoid cross-contamination. Many French bakeries work with almond flour, so it’s worth being cautious if someone in your group has allergies.
For DIY solutions, bring along allergy-friendly baking supplies from home or purchase them from larger supermarkets like E.Leclerc.
