La Plagne Winter Olympics 2030

Updated 30 November 2023.

UPDATE: France Winter Olympics 2030 is successful!

UPDATE: Announced at 6 pm on the 29th of November, France has gained the backing of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), removing Sweden and Switzerland from the bidding race for the Winter 2030 Olympics!

This means France is now the sole bid to host the Games in 2030, with Salt Lake City as the only bid for the 2034 Winter Olympics!

Whilst there are ongoing discussions, or “targeted dialogue,” between the IOC and the French bid team, it is now looking extremely likely that the Olympics will be hosted in France, but this will be officially confirmed in July 2024.  And, of course, this means that the Olympic Bobsleigh will be in La Plagne!

France Winter Olympics 2030

This summer saw France announce their bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. France has already hosted the Winter Olympics 3 times, in Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968 and Albertville in 1992.

For the 2030 Winter Olymp[ics, France is competing with established bids from Sweden and Switzerland to host the 2030 Games. Salt Lake City is aiming to host the 2034 edition.

A Two-Region, Four-Cluster Concept

France's bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics centres on an innovative two-region, four-cluster concept. The picturesque Côte d'Azur region, anchored by the vibrant city of Nice, would serve as the heart of the Games, hosting ice sports competitions and providing a stunning backdrop for the opening and closing ceremonies.

Complementing the Côte d'Azur region would be the Savoie region, renowned for its world-class alpine skiing and snowboarding facilities. La Plagne, a gem within the Savoie region, would proudly host alpine skiing and freestyle skiing events, showcasing its breathtaking slopes to the world.

This unique two-region concept, with Nice and Savoie acting as complementary hubs, would not only distribute the excitement of the Games but also highlight the diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures of France.

Sustainability & France’s 2030 Winter Olympics bid

France's aim to host the first sustainable Winter Olympics in 2030 focuses on minimising environmental impact, primarily by avoiding the construction of new sporting sites. The bid emphasises that 95 percent of the required infrastructure is already in place, such as using the bobsleigh track in La Plagne, built and used in the 1992 Albertville winter olympics.

The sole major new project is an Olympic-standard ice rink in Nice for hosting ice-skating events. This commitment to using existing facilities aligns with the approach taken by the Paris 2024 summer Olympics team, where almost all events will occur in pre-existing venues, with only the aquatics centre and athletes' village being newly constructed.

The international broadcast and media facilities would be set up in Nice, which would also host the Athletes Village. It's likely that the closing ceremony would take place in Nice as well.

Then, when it comes to the separate winter Olympics sporting events:

  • Nice – potential for a new ice skating arena to host:
    • Figure skating,
    • Ice hockey
    • Short-track speed skating
    • Curling
  • Alpine Zone – Briançonnais:
    • Ski cross
    • Snowboard cross
    • Snowboard
    • Freestyle skiing
  • Snow Region – Savoie Zone:
    • Bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton at La Plagne slope
    • Women’s alpine skiing in Méribel
    • Men’s alpine skiing in Courchevel

The Haute Savoie is also a possible location for the opening ceremony as a tribute to previous French Winter Games hosts Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968, and Albertville 1992.

More information on successful bids is expected at the end of the month between November 29th and December 1st, although a final decision may not be made before Summer 2024.

That’s La Plagne & the France 2030 Winter Olympics Bid

France's bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics promises an exciting and dynamic showcase of winter sports in stunning locations across the country. The diverse regions, from the Alpine beauty of Briançonnais to the snow-covered landscapes of Savoie and the Haute-Savoie, provide an ideal backdrop for a memorable Olympic experience.

Moreover, the prospect of bringing back the Olympic bobsleigh to La Plagne adds a nostalgic touch for me, working and living in La Plagne.
