What is an altitude or mountain restaurant?

One of the questions I hear all the time is, “What is a mountain restaurant?” Especially if you are already up a mountain, in a ski resort! It can be confusing. Basically, in a ski resort, a mountain restaurant is a culinary oasis nestled amidst the picturesque slopes of a winter wonderland. Simply put, it is usually on the ski slopes and not accessible by vehicle, but only on skis, on foot or by ski lift.

Located at high altitudes, mountain restaurants provide a welcome respite from the exhilarating outdoor activities. Skiers can conveniently ski or snowboard directly to these restaurants, making them a popular choice for refuelling and recharging during a day on the slopes.

These restaurants often cater to a diverse range of tastes and preferences, offering a variety of culinary delights that showcase both local and international flavours. From traditional alpine dishes like fondue and raclette to gourmet cuisine and international specialities, there is something to please every palate.

But, beyond the food, mountain or altitude restaurants provide an opportunity to soak in the awe-inspiring beauty of the surrounding mountainscape. With panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, pristine slopes, and enchanting valleys, diners can savour their meals while being surrounded by nature's grandeur.

As well as the outdoor terrace and stunning views, mountain restaurants often feature cosy interiors with rustic decor, creating a warm and inviting ambience. Think crackling fireplaces, wooden accents, and alpine-inspired design elements contribute to a charming atmosphere that complements the snowy landscape outside.

So whether it's enjoying après-ski drinks, savouring a hearty meal, or simply basking in the tranquillity of the mountains, a mountain restaurant in a ski resort offers a unique and memorable experience that combines gastronomy with the majesty of nature.

La Plagne Mountain Restaurant 2 - Chalet L’Arpette

Chalet Arpette Restaurant, La Plagne

L'Arpette has become one of my go-to spots to unwind and soak in the natural splendour that La Plagne has to offer. The snow-capped peaks, sprawling slopes, and picturesque valleys create a mesmerising backdrop as I indulge in one of the best hot chocolates in La Plagne or a long lunch stop. Whether I'm sitting inside the cosy interior or enjoying the fresh alpine air on the terrace, the views are simply spectacular.

For locals and visitors alike, L'Arpette is a haven where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of La Plagne while enjoying a delicious meal. La Plagne Mountain Restaurant 3 - Le Dou Du Praz

Perched at the top of the Dou Du Praz walking area, the views are just stunning from this restaurant. You overlook the pistes but also across the valley towards Mont Blanc.

It’s also good for pedestrians, and you can walk up from either Plagne Centre, Plagne Village or Plagne Soleil and also Bellecôte. It is a steep walk from most of these villages, so take your time! Dogs are also welcome.

Walking to Le Dou Du Praz, you can’t help but be captivated by the natural beauty that surrounds you. The panoramic vistas provided a truly enchanting atmosphere for my dining experience. Whether you chose to sit indoors or on the large, outdoor terrace, the views were absolutely mesmerising.

Whether you're a pedestrian or a skier, I highly recommend visiting Le Dou Du Praz to immerse yourself in the breathtaking views that La Plagne has to offer. They also do an evening dinner service one night a week when you are picked up in a piste basher. Check out their website to book ahead.

La Plagne Mountain Restaurant 4: Le Roc des Blanchets

Roc des Blanchets La Plagne

On the picturesque Champagny slopes, the southern-facing side of La Plagne, Le Roc des Blanchets Restaurant is an absolute find among La Plagne's mountain restaurants. It’s located at the top of the Rossa chairlift, just traverse to the right across the slope to get there.

There is a seated, served menu – book ahead as the tables are snapped up quickly – and a self-service section. The queuing system for the self-service is chaotic but quick. And FYI, the drinks line is separate from the food line. We usually stop at the self-service and the food is excellent and great value for the quality and portion sizes.

However, what sets it apart is the breathtaking views it offers. Plus, it's an absolute sun trap. I was there recently when the temperature across La Plagne was -5C, and yet for lunch on the sunny terrace here, we were stripping off layers and topping up our sun cream!

The terrace offers panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks, sprawling slopes, and views towards Champagny. You can even glimpse Courchevel across the valley!

There is an indoor seating area as well if their weather isn't ideal and you need a bit of shelter.

Whether you're seeking a moment of tranquillity and a quick lunch stop or a break from skiing, a visit to Le Roc des Blanchets Restaurant is an absolute must for anyone who appreciates the splendour of the mountains.

La Plagne Mountain Restaurant 5: Le 360

Nestled up above Montalbert, Le 360 Mountain Restaurant offers a delightful escape for those seeking panoramic views and a sunny terrace. To get there, take the Montablert gondola, also accessible for pedestrians and nonskiers in the winter. Or, from the other La Plagne altitude villages, take the Adrets chairlift.

As you arrive, you will see that the views really are 360 degrees! With views across the ski slopes back down towards Montalbert. But then also behind the Le 360 restaurant, there is a lake, forest area, backcountry skiing and back towards the other La Plagne altitude villages.

The terrace is quite a sun trap and the perfect spot to soak up the beauty of the alpine landscape. Le 360 Mountain Restaurant offers a serene retreat for nature lovers and adventurers seeking a moment of tranquillity amidst breathtaking scenery.

I should also mention that there is a picnic spot here as well, so if you fancy relaxing and taking your own food up to this photo spot, then there are lots of tables and benches on the back side of the building (not immediately visible when you get off of either lift).

Other La Plagne Mountain Restaurants and Bars with Scenic Views

While these five restaurants offer some of the best views in La Plagne, there are plenty of other notable restaurants that offer a dining experience with a view. Some other options to consider include are:

  • La Bergerie La Plagne – I have to mention La Bergerie when talking about La Plagne mountain restaurants. However, you might be more familiar with La Bergerie après ski because it is the go-to après-ski on the snow in La Plagne. But it is also a great La Plagne piste restaurant, with a large sunny terrace to enjoy long lunches. Rather than panoramic views, La Bergerie restaurant is great for people watching the skiers and snowboarders on the cruisy blue pistes.
  • If we're talking sunny terraces, we've got to include Monica's in Plagne Soleil. The food is delicious, and the service is great. Plus, Monica's has a massive terrace, and I think it's one of the last spots in the sun at the end of the day. Perfect for après ski or a long lunch with friends.
  • Up above Champagny, La Plagne, on the Bozelet blue piste, Le Balcon du Bozelet is a small, funky restaurant that captivates visitors with its breathtaking view. Honestly, it is one of my favourite viewpoints in La Plagne. The menu is limited, paninis and fondue. However, it is the unparalleled vista that truly steals the show. With panoramic views across the Champagny Valley towards Courchevel, diners are treated to an awe-inspiring visual feast while indulging in their snacks. To be honest, I rarely stop here for food but will always stop by visiting family members for a can of Coke or hot chocolate to relax and take in the view. Though the drinks might be a bit on the pricier side, the unforgettable scenery makes every sip worthwhile. Chalet Bozelet is a hidden gem, offering a unique experience that perfectly complements the enchanting beauty of La Plagne.
  • Chalet de La Grande Rochette, at the top of the Grande Rochette bubble lift, is a great option for a beautiful view. The iconic heart viewpoint is at the top of the mountain here, so it’s a great photo spot. However, it’s also well worth mentioning because pedestrians and non-skiers can also get here using the gondola. You do need a pedestrian pass to use the lift, but bypass the main lift lines and use the pedestrian line on the left-hand side, which is much quicker.
  • Chalet la Roche de Mio deserves a mention for its stunning 360 degree views. It's great for casual dining with a snack bar and self service restaurant.
