Ambience and Setting
As we stepped onto the large, sun-drenched terrace of Roc des Blanchets, we were immediately enveloped in a bustling atmosphere that was both energetic and welcoming. The restaurant's prime location affords it some of the most stunning south-facing views, overlooking Champagny and Courchevel. The sight of snowy peaks under the clear blue sky while we enjoyed our lunch was simply breathtaking. I’ve lived here for nearly 20 years, and I was still blown away!
There is an indoor seating area, plus an upstairs one if the weather isn’t great. While we didn’t sit indoors, I did have a walk around, and the decor is classic Savoyard, but it has some cool additions, like some original painted wall murals and wooden pieces of art resembling mountain animals.
Roc des Blanchets Menu
Roc de Blanchets offers a choice between seated service and self-service. So you can opt for a more relaxed or a quick meal, depending on your skiing schedule. We all found something we enjoyed for our lunches! Our group’s choices were a testament to the variety – from the classic tartiflette, which was a cheesy delight, to the simple yet perfectly cooked omelette and chips, and possibly the best lasagne I’ve had in La Plagne paired wonderfully with a fresh salad.
Afterwards, we enjoyed some great Irish coffees, hot chocolates with cream and the lightest tarte au citron (lemon meringue tarte). To be honest, it’s impressive that we managed to put our skis on and get back home after the amount we ate! I should say the hot chocolate is on my list of the top hot chocolate stops in La Plagne.
Kid-Friendliness at Roc de Blanchets
One of the aspects I truly appreciate about Roc des Blanchets is its family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant provides ample space for kids, which is always a relief for parents. The children’s menu, with choices like tagliatelle, sausage & chips, and the ever-popular burger, was a hit with our little ones. Phoenix, my son, was more than happy with his plate of chips – a simple pleasure but sometimes just what the kids want after a morning on the slopes! And it only cost 7€, a fraction of what kids' menus in the mountains usually cost. He topped up with some of my lasagne and salad, so I felt like a better parent!
Service at Roc de Blanchets
Initially, we were planning on sitting at the served section of Roc des Blanchets, but we hadn’t booked in advance and there were no tables! Missing out on the seated service, we embraced the self-service side. And it was probably the better option, with hungry kids that wanted to eat quickly!
Despite the long queue, the staff managed it efficiently, ensuring that the line moved quickly. Remember, there are separate queues for food and drinks – a vital tip for those craving a warm beverage or a cold beer. The staff's ability to handle the rush while maintaining quick and friendly service was impressive.
The only struggle was that I sat at our table with the kids while my husband went with friends to order. However, he needed me to help carry the trays back to the table. So stay in touch over the phone, and you might need to leave the kids alone whilst you collect your meals.
Accessibility and Location
I hate the word ‘perched,’ but Roc des Blanchets really is perched on the Champagny ski slopes on the Serac blue piste at the bottom of the Rossa chairlift. So, the restaurant is accessible only to those on skis.
The sunny terrace is such a sun trap! When we were there, it was freezing -9C in the shade on the northern-facing slopes. And yet, the Roc des Blanchets terrace was not just warm. It felt hot! We really were basking in the sun's warmth, surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Alps. Make sure you pack the suncream. It’s a spot where time seems to slow down, inviting skiers to relax and soak in the mountain ambience. This is by far one of the best sunny terraces in La Plagne.
Price Range and Value for Money
Dining in a ski resort, especially in a location as prime as Roc des Blanchets, comes with a certain expectation regarding prices. While not the cheapest option on the mountain, it’s definitely not among the most expensive! The restaurant offers great value for the quality of food, the ambience, and the stunning views. The menu’s diversity caters to various tastes and budgets, ensuring that every skier can find something delightful to refuel with.
Overall Experience and Recommendations
Our lunch at Roc des Blanchets absolutely made our day. The combination of delicious food, the joy of sharing a meal with friends and family, and the unparalleled alpine scenery made for an unforgettable experience. It’s a place that warmly invites skiers to take a break from their adventures and enjoy the essence of mountain living.
We could have happily sat there all day but had to get back to pick kids up from ski clubs.
