Le Refuge Restaurant La Plagne: A Full Review

Le Refuge La Plagne Restaurant Review

When it comes to enjoying a meal out in La Plagne, Le Refuge in Plagne Centre is high on my hit list! I’ve no idea how long Le Refuge has been in La Plagne, but I’ve been heading there since I first arrived in La Plagne in 2005. It was a favourite spot then and still is now.

It’s a standout choice for families in search of a welcoming atmosphere paired with the best tastes of Savoyard cuisine. What also makes it a bit different to a lot of the restaurants around La Plagne is that it isn’t on the snow. In the Pierra Menta square in Plagne Centre, opposite the ice rink. So it is really accessible for those less steady on their feet or for prams and wheelchair access.

Let’s jump into what you can expect at Le Refuge, from menus to atmosphere, service and what happens when your kid throws up in the restaurant!

Join the inside track to get the story first from La Plagne.

Atmosphere and Accessibility

On entering Le Refuge, you're immediately enveloped in a warm and congenial ambience that feels reminiscent of stepping into a friend's home. Refurbished maybe a decade ago, the decor blends the classic Savoyard chalet style, with vintage and modern touches. From the old-fashioned jukebox on the side as you walk in, to the neon deer lights. The mix is eclectic but it works!

It’s always lively here. The place buzzes with the sound of convivial chatter, and the aroma of melting cheese and sizzling meats is utterly mouth-watering.

Families will find the spacious toilets, complete with baby-changing facilities, so convenient, eliminating any potential stress. Plus there is comfortable space at most of the tables for a pushchair or buggy. However, I’d recommend mentioning if you are bringing young children who plan to sleep or stay in their pushchair. Then, the team can allocate you one of the better-located tables.

Menu Highlights

Le Refuge's menu is a celebration of Savoyard culinary traditions, with the cheese fondue particularly standing out as a heavenly concoction of the finest local cheeses. We were there last week with friends and they had the meat fondue whilst we enjoyed the fondue with cepes. Sometimes, cheese fondue can be quite oily or greasy, but this one was thicker and really tasty. Accompanied by chips or the most delicious dauphinoise potatoes – the 4 of us split the 2 between us. Plus, of course, the optional charcuterie platter. I’m never too bothered by the cured meats – I’m here for the cheese! But my husband happily eats both our portions, so everyone is happy.

As well as the fondues, Le Refuge also specialises in other classic Savoyard dishes like tartiflette, croziflette, pierrade and brazzerade. If you are interested in ordering the brazzerade – which is a table-top BBQ style grill – make sure to mention this when you book because you need a specific table with a chimney/extraction above your table.

Family-Friendly Features

Le Refuge distinguishes itself with thoughtful touches that cater specifically to families. From slightly more spacious tables to highchairs, larger toilets and simple set menus and kids' options – or just plates of fries and chips! It all helps to make dining out with little ones so much easier and a pleasure.

A great thing here too is that they have early sittings, we booked for 7pm, but the doors open at 630 pm for the dinner service, so we could arrive a little earlier, aiming to get the kids fed early, not to make too late a night of it.

I would recommend booking ahead as they get very busy. In peak weeks, there will typically be 2 service times: 7 pm and 9 pm (or 930pm). Out of the peak ski weeks, there is more flexibility for other time slots.
