Review: Chalet des Dolines, La Plagne – A Cosy Mountain Lunch Spot

Snow-covered alpine restaurant with outdoor seating sits at the edge of a ski slope in La Plagne, surrounded by scenic snowy peaks and clear blue skies. A pirate flag flutters near the terrace, and the shadow of a ski lift crosses the rooftop.

Finding the right place to stop for a meal while skiing in La Plagne can be the difference between a rushed, average experience and a genuinely enjoyable break. With so many options across the resort, it’s worth knowing which restaurants offer great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and efficient service. Chalet des Dolines on the Trieuse ski slope in La Plagne is one of those spots that often gets overlooked, possibly because of its location early on in the ski day for many visitors.

As someone who lives in La Plagne, I had never actually stopped here before, despite skiing past it countless times. That changed last week when I visited with friends. Without the kids in tow this time, we decided to take our time and enjoy a leisurely lunch. It turned out to be a fantastic experience, and I now understand why this restaurant has such a good reputation. In this review, I will cover everything from the atmosphere and accessibility to the food, service, and pricing so that you can decide if it’s the right place for your next mountain meal.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere

Chalet des Dolines is a great option for families skiing in La Plagne, with a relaxed and welcoming environment that caters to different needs. The restaurant is divided into two sections, giving visitors the option of either a sit-down meal or a quick, self-service option. The seated dining area allows guests to enjoy table service and a more refined menu, making it an excellent choice for families who want to take a proper break from skiing. This section can be booked in advance, which is recommended during peak periods. The self-service section, on the other hand, offers a faster, more casual experience and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. This is particularly useful for those skiing with children who may not want to sit through a long meal before getting back onto the slopes.

During my visit, I took a look at the children's menu and was impressed by the flexibility it offered. The restaurant provides the option of ordering a half portion of the dish of the day for younger children, which is a thoughtful addition that helps reduce food waste while still giving kids the chance to enjoy freshly prepared meals. The general atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and inviting, with friendly staff who are attentive to guests’ needs. While I was there without my children, I could see that families were well catered for, and the relaxed setting made it an easy place for kids to enjoy their meals.

One thing to keep in mind is that, because this is a true mountain restaurant located directly on the slopes, it is not easily accessible for non-skiers. Families travelling with infants or those who are not skiing will find it difficult to reach. There are no baby-changing facilities, which is understandable given its location, but for families with older children who are skiing, this restaurant is a solid choice for a meal break.

Accessibility – Skiers, Pedestrians & Wheelchair Users

Chalet des Dolines is a true ski-in, ski-out restaurant, making it an ideal stop for skiers looking for a convenient meal on the slopes. It is situated on the Trieuse ski slope at an altitude of 2100 metres and is accessible via the Colosses or Bergerie chairlifts. From these lifts, skiers can take the Trieuse piste down to the restaurant, making it a logical choice for those skiing in this area. However, due to its location, accessibility is limited for non-skiers. Pedestrians could reach the restaurant depending on conditions and access routes, but it is not a straightforward walk from the main village areas.

For disabled skiers and taxi-skiers, once inside, the restaurant does have a disabled-access toilet, which is a positive feature, though guests need to ask staff for the key to use it. The indoor dining area is spacious, and the layout is manageable for those with mobility concerns. The main access on the terrace was down some steps cut into the snow. So you’d need to head onto the main terraces and round to the door to get inside. A little longer route, but absolutely doable.

For those looking for an outdoor dining experience, Chalet des Dolines has a large terrace that is perfect on sunny days. Unfortunately, during my visit, it was particularly cold and windy, so we opted to sit inside instead. The terrace would be a great spot for lunch on a warm spring day when the sun is shining, providing beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Overall, while the accessibility is great for skiers, of all abilities it is not well-suited for non-skiers.

The Menu – What to Expect

Chalet des Dolines offers a mix of classic mountain dishes and fresh, homemade meals, catering to a variety of tastes, including vegetarians and vegans. The menu features hearty Alpine favourites alongside lighter options, with everything made fresh in-house.

Expect traditional Savoyard dishes like Tartiflette, alongside soups, salads, and burgers. They also offer vegan-friendly choices, such as the Lentil and Seitan Dahl, proving that mountain food isn’t just about cheese and meat. For those with a sweet tooth, the dessert selection is excellent, and the Café Gourmand is a great way to try a little bit of everything.

Service & My Experience

On the day of my visit, the weather was particularly cold, and after a morning of skiing, my friends and I decided to swap the slopes for a long, warming lunch. Since I usually ski past this restaurant in the morning, I had never stopped here before, but I was eager to finally try it out. We had not booked a table, but despite it being busy, the staff were accommodating and managed to find us a spot inside. The terrace would have been lovely in better weather, but on this occasion, sitting indoors was a much better option. We actually lucked out and ended up next to the fireplace, so it was nice and cosy.

We chose to sit in the seated dining area, which allowed us to order from the full menu and take our time. The self-service section was available for those wanting a quicker meal, but we were happy to settle in for a relaxed lunch. We started with Irish coffees, which were well-made and reasonably priced at nine euros each. For the main course, I opted for the lentil and seitan dahl, which was a delicious and warming vegan option. My husband had the tartiflette, which was generously portioned and packed with flavour. One of our friends ordered the chicken Caesar salad, which was fresh and well-balanced.

The service was quick and friendly throughout the meal, and despite the restaurant being busy, we never felt rushed. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, and the overall atmosphere was warm and welcoming. For dessert, I had a café gourmand, which was excellent. The coffee was of high quality, which is not always the case in mountain restaurants, and the dessert selection was tempting enough that I will definitely return to try more.

We rounded off the day with some genepi shots which were really good. It was a nice quality genepi, which is not always the case at a lot of the mountain restaurants!

The facilities at Chalet des Dolines were also a pleasant surprise. The toilets were modern, spacious, and very clean, which is not something you can always say about mountain restaurants. The disabled-access toilet was available upon request, but there was no baby-changing table, which makes sense given that this restaurant is primarily designed for skiers. Overall, the experience was excellent, and I would happily return.

Pricing – Is It Worth It?

The pricing at Chalet des Dolines is in line with what you would expect for a quality mountain restaurant. It is not the cheapest option in La Plagne, but for the standard of food and service, it offers good value for money. The Irish coffee was priced at nine euros, which is reasonable considering the location and the quality of the drink. Main courses range from around fifteen to twenty-five euros, depending on the dish, and desserts are typically between seven and ten euros.

If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, the self-service section would be a better choice, as it offers quicker meals at a lower price point. However, for those wanting a proper sit-down meal, the prices are fair for what you get. The portion sizes were generous, and the quality of the ingredients was clear.

Overall, Chalet des Dolines is a great choice for those wanting a relaxed meal in a cosy setting, and while it is not the cheapest restaurant on the slopes, the experience and quality make it worth the cost.
