Is La Plagne Snow-Sure in December?
This is probably the question I hear the most: “Is La Plagne snow sure in December?” Whilst we/I cannot control the weather, we can make good predictions based on the La Plagne snow history in December.
La Plagne is renowned for its snow reliability, especially in December. With over 70% of its ski area situated above 2000 metres, the resort benefits from consistent snowfall and excellent snow retention. Historically, December sees an average of 114 cm of snowfall, providing a solid base for the season ahead.
The resort's extensive snowmaking capabilities further increase its snow-sure reputation. With 600 snow cannons strategically placed across the slopes, La Plagne ensures optimal conditions even during periods of low natural snowfall.
So, whilst we can’t guarantee good snowfall for December in La Plagne, we can make a good argument that we will have good snowfall in December. I have also been here for nearly 20 years, and there is yet to be a December with no snow.

December in La Plagne is undoubtedly chilly, but that makes it so perfect for skiing! It’s not the coldest point of the ski season, however, and daytime temperatures typically hover around 0°C to -5 °C (32°F to 23°F), while the nights can drop considerably lower.

What snow conditions are the pistes in December in La Plagne?
The pistes in La Plagne in December are generally in great condition. With the opening of the winter season, the resort's dedicated grooming teams work tirelessly to ensure that the slopes are smooth and ready for action. Fresh snowfall and well-groomed trails make for a fantastic skiing experience.
The whole of the Paradiski resort will be open in December. So from the La Plagne glacier peaks, to the valley villages, you'll be able to explore the whole resort.
The one thing that is often lagging is the snow parks, the La Plagne Riders Nation snow park, and the kids’ fun slopes. Whilst the pistes are in great groomed condition, there is often not enough stockpiled snow to create the features and jumps in the Riders Nation snow park. Typically, the snow parks open up in January. The fun slope will be open, but there will be fewer features and more added throughout January.

How expensive are December ski holidays in La Plagne?
While skiing in La Plagne can be a luxury experience, it doesn’t have to be! Early December tends to be more budget-friendly compared to the peak festive Christmas and New Year weeks. You can often find a lot of ski deals for the La Plagne opening week and pre-Christmas weeks.
But also, we should mention that whilst Christmas and New Year ski weeks are peak ski season, they are also cheaper than the February ½ term weeks. So if you are tied to traveling for the kid's school holidays, December might be a better option than February.
Accommodation prices and ski rental, lessons, etc., are often more reasonable, making it an ideal time for families to enjoy this stunning resort without breaking the bank. The pre-Christmas week(s) are great fun, exploring new features and trying out the season’s best hot chocolate stops! While it's not as bustling as the holidays, there's still a vibrant energy in the air, and you won't find yourself waiting in long lift lines.
Over the Christmas and New Year weeks, the crowds definitely take it up a notch. You’ll find the ski schools much busier for children's classes, and you’ll definitely find yourself in ski lift lines. But never anything too fierce! And if you play it clever, get out early or over lunch – i.e., when the ski schools aren’t running – you’ll still enjoy quiet pistes to yourself.
Can you ski on Christmas Day?
This is a question I hear a lot! Can you ski on Christmas Day? Yes! Absolutely, you can ski on Christmas day. Christmas, in some ways, is just another day in the mountains. Restaurants will be running, pistes will be open and the air will be filled with festive cheer! There are lots of organised events and festive photo opportunities all around La Plagne. What is worth noting is that ski schools will be running as normal, but most kids won’t be there because they’ll be enjoying the morning with their families. The ski slopes are often quiet until mid to late morning. Oh, and yes, you’ll see a lot of Santas on the slopes on Christmas Day!
