Finding gluten-free food options in ski resorts can vary depending on the location and the facilities available. In La Plagne, over recent years, there has been an increased awareness of dietary restrictions, including gluten-free diets, so many more restaurants and food shops are making an effort to cater to a diverse range of dietary needs. 5 tips for La Plagne ski holidays & gluten-free diets

Navigating a ski holiday while following a gluten-free diet can be manageable with some planning and awareness. Here are five top tips to help you have a great gluten-free ski holiday:

1. Research and plan ahead

Before your ski trip, research the ski resort and surrounding areas. Look for gluten-free-friendly restaurants, grocery stores with gluten-free products, and accommodations that understand and cater to dietary restrictions.

Create a list of gluten-free restaurants, shops, and cafes that you can refer to during your stay.

My top tip for this would be to find the local ski resort Facebook groups and ask in there. These groups are managed and filled by people (like me!) who have learned from trial and error and are happy to share their experiences. Go join La Plagne Facebook Group

2. Communicate dietary needs

Inform your accommodation provider and any restaurants you plan to visit about your gluten-free requirements in advance. All the La Plagne restaurants I have spoken to have said to let them know when you book so that they are aware of your requirements. This gives them time to prepare and ensures a smoother dining experience.

When ordering at restaurants, clearly communicate your dietary restrictions to the staff and ask about gluten-free options or modifications to existing menu items.

3. Pack gluten-free snacks

Pack a variety of gluten-free snacks to have on hand during your ski outings. This can include gluten-free granola bars, nuts, fruits, and other non-perishable items. Basically, whatever you enjoy at home, bring along with you. Having snacks readily available can be especially useful during activities when it may be challenging to find suitable gluten-free options.

If you’re worried about how much space this might take up in your ski holiday packing, contact your ski holiday accommodation and see if you can get a parcel delivered, e.g. from Amazon.fr, so it’s there ready for your arrival.

4. Check ski restaurant and chalet menus

Ski accommodation providers often have set menus. Before heading to the slopes, check the menus at these places for gluten-free options. This is great to do before you book your ski holiday to find a place that meets your requirements.

If a restaurant or ski chalet company can’t provide this information, then there’s your answer! They aren’t the La Plagne ski holiday provider for you!

5. Use translation cards

If you are travelling to La Plagne and your French is limited, consider using gluten-free translation cards. These cards can be presented to restaurant staff to convey your dietary restrictions in the local language, reducing the risk of misunderstandings. Translation cards can be found online or created with the help of translation apps to ensure accuracy.

My favourite translation app is Deepl. I use it every day, no exaggeration! I find it is much more accurate than Google Translate. Plus, with Deepl, you can take photos of menus and translate them immediately. It’s so simple.

BONUS TIP: more restaurant mentions

Here are some other restaurants that have been recommended to me, but I haven't had a chance to explore them yet.  They either have gluten-free options on the menu or the ability to change up the menu to accommodate dietary requirements.
