Baby food in La Plagne: feeding babies on ski holidays

Travelling with a baby can seem daunting, especially when planning a trip to a ski resort like La Plagne. As a local resident and a mum – I've already raised two boys right here in the middle of the French Alps, and I've just had our third baby girl! So, I understand the trials and stresses as much as the next mum! Parenting babies is hard at home! So managing a baby's needs when away on holiday brings its own challenges. With my personal experience working with tour operators and managing large hotels with childcare facilities around La Plagne, I'm here to guide you through everything from supermarket finds to restaurant feeds.

Do La Plagne’s supermarkets have baby food?
The main supermarkets in La Plagne are the minimarket Spar supermarkets. Much smaller than your usual supermarket market, the Spar’s are surprisingly well-stocked when it comes to baby food. You can find a variety of brands, including popular ones like Hipp Organic and Cow & Gate, offering everything from pureed fruit and vegetables to well-balanced chicken and rice dinners. These are available in both jars and easy-to-carry pouches. Prices are reasonable, with purees starting around €1.50, climbing to around €3 for organic options. For those needing special dietary products, there are gluten-free and lactose-free baby foods to ensure no one misses out.
If you are looking for baby milk formula, then head to the pharmacy and not the supermarkets in La Plagne. The two pharmacies in La Plagne are in Bellecôte, just next to the swimming pool on the snowfront. And in Plagne Centre, next door to the Spar supermarket.
If you are shopping for baby formula in the valley in the valley, then you can find milk formula in the supermarkets as well as the pharmacies.
Tips for buying baby food in La Plagne
Shopping in a ski resort doesn't have to be a hassle. The best times to visit Spar are early morning or late evening to avoid the après-ski crowd. The Spars are generally open from 8 am to 7 pm, 7 days a week. Each La Plagne village has its own minimarket, but the largest ones are in Belle Plagne and Plagne Centre. None of them provide a food delivery service, so you do need to visit them to shop. Be aware that they get very busy on arrival days – Saturdays and Sundays. So if you can avoid shopping with babies, then I recommend it!
Feeding babies in La Plagne restaurants
Breastfeeding in La Plagne is widely accepted. Although there aren’t dedicated breastfeeding corners in restaurants, most venues can direct you to a table with more privacy if you need it.
Most of the restaurants in La Plagne are family-friendly and cater to the needs of our youngest guests. They’ll provide high chairs and have a welcoming attitude towards breastfeeding. The one thing to be aware of is that space is a premium in ski resorts! This is true in our La Plagne restaurants, where a lot of venues will pack in as many tables as they can. If you are heading for a meal with babies in pushchairs or prams, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and confirm a table with space to park a buggy.
I spend a lot of my time eating in and reviewing the best La Plagne restaurants (it’s a hard life!), and I always try to include this information in the reviews. Plus, there are baby-changing facilities and toilet access. This is something that is lacking, with a surprising number of restaurants not providing good baby-changing tables. So, my top tip would be to always have a travel-changing mat with you for any changes on the go.

How to breastfeed a baby in sub-zero temperatures
But of course, one of the main concerns mums have while breastfeeding during a ski holiday is managing the cold temperatures! It's crucial to stay warm and comfortable, particularly when feeding your baby in a chilly environment. The easiest solution is to find a cosy spot indoors where both you and your baby can be comfortable.
If you need to breastfeed outside, dressing in warm, accessible layers is key. Wear a flexible, easy-access top under a well-insulated jacket that can be easily draped over your shoulder to provide extra warmth and privacy. With the addition of a muslin cloth or scarf, you should find you have plenty of protection against the cold for your baby.
Additionally, consider carrying thermal flasks with warm water or herbal tea to help keep your body temperature up and ensure you stay hydrated. Thermal pads or hand warmers can also be a handy addition to your breastfeeding kit, offering a quick way to warm up your hands before and after feeding.
If you're bottle-feeding, local pharmacies stock a range of infant formulas, sterilising equipment, and bottled water suitable for baby milk. Remember, tap water here is mountain-fresh and safe, so you can always have a supply of boiled, cooled water with you.
A final note on breastfeeding outdoors in ski resorts. Whilst you might not think about it, it’s actually very sunny here a lot of the time. Even when the temperature might be sub-zero, it can still be a blue sky, sunshine day. So think about slathering that sun cream on your baby, but also on the areas of your breasts that are going to be exposed. Also, pop some sunglasses in your baby bag. The angle of a breastfeeding or bottle-feeding baby often means they are tilted up towards the sun.
